Got another possibility, could John Thomas Stevenson who is burried in BOS have been born in Scotland?

Finally got the info from the Parish Council, about John Thomas Stevenson. In the ledgers he is buried as John James Stevenson Int on 7/ DEC/1944 age 43. So next stop cemetery, but there is no headstone on the grave! There was no other info in the ledgers, (Thomas) looked like typo from James, and age 48 typo 43.

That census rootsgather has posted looks very promising.

I'd forgotton how complicated this thread had become, but that is good news on the burial record - it now ties in with the index. A copy of that death certificate could prove useful - it should given an address and who registered the death (hopefully Gertrude). I don't think there will be much more to find at the cemetry though.

So, if I remember correctly, you have John James Stevenson death reg Q4/1944 Barrow (7a144) and buried as you've just detailed. Then Gertrude's mother Florence buried in the same grave a few years later, from the same address as your father was living at the time of his marriage. And memories that it was Gertrude who brought up your father.

It really does point to this JJS being your grandfather, but still doesn't get us any nearer Leonard's birth because we don't know his mother's name, and I would suspect his birth would be registered under her name because there's no sign of JJS getting married and a child registered under Stevenson.

Did you ever manage to get chance to check out the electoral rolls for Gertrude & Jack before that death?

Hi all,
Ive got the death cert for John James Stevenson ordered, hopefully it will have an address for him on it. As there was no address in the Parish ledgers, where does the info for them come from? Flip ive not checked the electoral rolls yet, will wait for JJs death cert to come first incase there is any other address to check out. The census for John James looks good but i cant get back any further on his parents for earlier census, having said they were all born in Loughborough?

Kevin, the address your father married from is the same as that given for the place of death for Gertrude's mother Florence Wells in 1962 - it's on the B-u-S parish transcripts. 5 The Retreat, I don't know if this was where John James Stevenson was living at the time of his death though - there's no address on that transcript, and a good few years have passed since his death.

Flip, my dad went in the army from 54-56 he was living at 109 North St then. But when he came home the houses had been knocked down, and he had to ask someone where his mum (Gertrude) had gone. They had been rehoused at 5 the Retreat, from where he married, that house is still there. So any address for JJ would come back as 109 North St or other if any. The census info rootgatherer found looks very interesting, any info on that side of the family is very useful. Spelling change of the name is also very interesting. Dont think we will ever find out who his real mum was or his true birth details, but all info on his dads side of the family is what i also wanted to find out about.

Hi all,

I got the death cert for John James, it gives his address as 109 North St BOS. So thats the link between him an Gertrude, ive checked census for that side of the family from the info rootgatherer found, got some good results. But couldnt find a trace on Edith May, JJs sister? I also got Joseph Stevensons marriage cert between him an Mary Ann Smith in 1901, thats JJs parents, her dad is John Smith. She was born 1879 Loughborough ,but i cant find them local through the census? Not untill 1911, when she was married? With a name like Smith though its not easy!

Sorry, I should have said John's occupation in 1901 is Stone Quarry man. No occupation given for Mary Ann and the address is Freehold Street. Does that match the marriage certificate that you have please?

Rootgatherer, the info on Edith May looks good no children from that marriage then? The marriage of Joesph and Mary Ann took place on 8/4/1901, the census was on the 31/3/1901. Addresses for them were Mill St and New St, could be Loughborough . But neither match the census info? Also there is a Mary Ann Smith and her brother Walter in the 1911 census in Quorn, but her DOB is given as 1883?
