The age is not 9 but _9 ( number missing)
As has been mentioned previously, this looks like the Father 's death

When you look at the image Mike the age is 39 which puts his birth at around 1854, is very puzzling but interesting :-)

Also from Free Reg:
Marriage for William Jarvis Gibson and Margaret Pryde Terras 28th July 1880 at South Lynn. Williams age given as 26 (born c1854). Occupation is schoolmaster from Bromley, Middlesex. Father: John Gibson, gardener. Witnesses were Charles Thomas Dennis and Sarah Anne Gibson.
