If John juniors father was a Timber Merchant I wonder if he went to the US and thats why John went there?

I did wonder the same thing as you actually.

Mel, don't think so becaus in the records before if we go by the fact that his mother WAS Ellen Burrows then his father died not long after or around his birth. We found a death:

Unfortunately it doesn't say what age he was.

In any case John Perkins seems to have been brought up by his mother and step-father, Thomas Powell.

Ellen Burrows Perkins then went on to marry Thomas Powell, the “lodger” and is living with him in Erdington in 1861 with the children. Thomas Powell (Brass Founder) and Ellen Perkins married West Brom J/F/M 1858 6b 609.

John Perkins age 17, born Rock it says son in law (in those days ‘son in law’ meant stepson so this would be correct)

At this time John Perkins is a brass founder so I’m presuming that he was working for his step-father before leaving for the USA between 1861 and 1864 (if Georgia was indeed his daughter).
