Checked it out! !881 census shows Joseph and son Thomas living at Cockhedge Lane Warrington. 1891 census shows Thomas and his wife Mary Ann living in Croft Nr Warrington with young son Thomas age 4yrs but no father Joseph! 1901 Shows Thomas and Mary Ann together with their son Thomas now age 14yrs living in Leigh Lancashire.
We can't concur with the Halifax info! But thanks anyway! Joseph still in Limbo!

I think this may be the Thomas you are looking at, the 1891 census has him born Croft, so this could be him 1881 in Leigh:
