Hello Cherilyn,You have helped me in the past and I am just now returning to some research.

William Arthur SOUTHION married my great great grandmother, widow of Faithful Crabb, in Grafton (Clarence River District) in 1850. I am trying to find the date he emigrated to NSW - he was born 1813 baptised St Mary, Newington, Surrey, England on 5 December 1813 and trained as a Watchmaker & Jeweller, worked in Sydney for a Mr Lamb, Watchmaker of George Street in 1844 (found in Trove newspapers).

I can't find him in the shipping lists but hope that you might be able to locate him for me. I have a lot of information for him after 1850.

PS Today (25/9/2017) I found a mention of William Southey working for Irving, Lamb & Co, Watchmakers, Sydney date 26 November, 1840. I think William Southey could well be "Southion".

Sorry for the lateness of my reply.

I cant see him in NSW shipping indexes though they are a bit sparse pre-1840.

It's possible he went to VDL (Tasmania) or another state first - maybe even via NZ.

I would greatly appreciate any info you can find on my grandmothers Minnie Doreen Phillips parents. I know her dad's name was Evan Phillip and her Mum Mary Ann.. I can only find a Maryann Brown but without proof I cannot be sure if this is her parents. Also, the family talk is that the Phillips came out as convicts. My grandmother born in Australia.

I have tried all I can to find the proof :-)

Thanks for your message. Can you please give me some more details? Do you know when/where Minnie was born? Or when and where her parents were born?

I think I have found Minnie's birth in NSW in 1916.

To get 'proof' you need to order her birth certificate, and then her parents marriage. These are fairly inexpensive through the NSW BDM site, or you can use a transcription agent like Joy Murrin.

seems Minnie's parents Evan PHILLIPS and Mary Ann BROWN married in 1904 in Adamstown district NSW (reg 8418).

Her father's obit states he died aged 70 in 1953 and was born in NSW. death reg has parents as John & Mary A (reg 4596, Mayfield district).

So this means this is most likely his birth: Evan PHILLIPS to John and Mary Ann PHILLIPS in Newcastle district in 1882 (reg 24510).

Once you are certain you have the right Evan, his birth cert should be your next step to make sure you are on the right track.

Going by death and memorial notices, this is the death of Mary Ann PHILLIPS nee BROWN's mother Elizabeth. Mary was known as Polly.

This fits the birth of Mary Ann BROWN in Newcastle district in 1885 to John & Elizabeth (reg 27039) and death of Mary Ann PHILLIPS in 1959 in Islington district (reg 19378), daughter of John & Elizabeth.

Of course, without certificates it is all speculation!

After a bit more snooping I have found Evan's mother's death, wife of John PHILLIPS of Mayfield, in 1897.

Her death reg in Waratah district NSW, father Charles (reg 6622).

She is at BAPTIST-DSW-19 at Sandgate Cemetery (link in previous post).

Sarah PHILLIPS, born 1881 to John & Mary A in Newcastle (sister of Evan), married Frederick RUNDLE in 1901, Wallsend district (reg 7750).

She died in 1956 in Hamilton district, NSW.

Marriage notice states 2nd daughter but can't find first. Nor brothers Edward & Chas mentioned in father John's death notice...

Another sister Alice, b. 1884 Newcastle, d. 1885 Lambton.

Brother Charles died in 1904 in Newcastle district (reg 2325), buried at Sandgate BAPTIST-ESE-39, January 1904. His funeral notice:

I have Charlotte Forster b London 1806, married Benjamin Deacon. She disappears after the 1841 census but Benjamin is living with his sister in 1851 and says he is married, not widowed. Their daughter Charlotte Maria married Frederick Hoare in 1857 then the couple emigrated to Australia, I have a fairly full family history of them after that. However, I did wonder if Charlotte Deacon went with them, as I can't find her here in any way.
Would you be able to check her out for me please?
