Hi Cherilyn,

I hope you can help me with this one. I am looking for Joseph Trebilcock b 1855 Cornwall parents Nicholas Trebilcock Sally Warne, I have found him in the 1861 and 1871 census so figure he must have gone to Australia after that. His wife is Catherine Cooper, not sure when he married her !!
Anything that you can find for me I will be most grateful.

Well I haven't found his marriage, but I did find him in Victoria with Catherine COOPER by 1888! They had the following chn:

Thank you ever so much for that. You are wonderful!! I have since found that Joseph went to NZ in 1878 married Kate Cooper in 1887 so they must have then gone to Australia after that.

Could this be him arriving in Queensland?

ESHELBY John [age] 42 [aboard] Cloncurry [arriving] 3 Feb 1886

A John ESHELBY married Annie FRENCH that very same year in Brisbane (reg B10507).

I can only see 2 children - William b. 1886 (fast worker!) and Eleanor Jane b. 1889, both in Brisbane. Sadly Wm died in 1888.

Eleanor died in 1930 as ESHELBY, though it appears she was married to James CUNDY, who she divorced in 1913. No marriage found but divorce article at Trove shows she married in Jan 1908 as Eleanor Jane Eshelby; they were both aged 18.

John died in 1931 (reg B14322). I can't find a record of Annie's death but it could be misspelt.

James CUNDY and Eleanor Jane ESHELBY had a son named Leslie Alfred CUNDY in 1908.

A marriage search for him comes up with his surname as SWENSON? perhaps he was adopted following his parents' divorce?

Thank you so very much for the Eshelby information. Now John is an interesting character I have found him in the 1881 census in Penge, Surrey with his wife Ann and 6 children. One called Eleanor another Jane and another William. He was 4 years younger when he was in Australia . :S
His mother was called Jane and his grandmother Eleanor. :P So definitely the same guy. A bit of a mystery there!!!

Please could you look up the death record of Cedric Hope in NSW 1874. I found an inquest record and it seems he suffered an accident. Does it list any details such as family members or anything else about him?

Trying to find any info on John Mann b 14/11/1819 in Wadhurst Sussex but gave his birthplace as Rotherfield on the 1851 census.

On a trial record in July 1855 he was sentenced to transportation for 15 years so wondering if you can find any marriages or a death for him in Aust. I could not find him on SA records.

Any info would be appreciated.

[Evening News.]-Mr. Cedric Hope, a young medical man, lately from England, accidentally fell down stairs at his residence, on Friday, and died yesterday afternoon, from injury to his spine, caused by the fall. An inquest was held on the body, and a verdict of accidental death was returned. The deceased is deeply regretted.

At the inquest on the body of the late Mr Cedric Hope, who was accidentally killed by a fall at Albury, it was stated by Mr Joseph Dwyer, solicitor, we learn from the Border Post, that he know the deceased gentleman, who had but recently arrived in the colony. He was a medical student at one of the Edinburgh universities but had not passed the final examination. His family resided at Carlisle, Cumberland, England. He was 26 years of age and unmarried. Witness saw him two days before his death and he said he intended going home. Sergeant Lenthall deposed to being the custodian of 21 medical certificates and a sum of money belonging to the deceased gentleman.

A fatal accident of a somewhat peculiar nature occurred at Albury on Friday. Dr. Cedric Hope, a medical man, aged 26 years, who had been for some weeks staying at the Rose Hotel, went to his bedroom, in the evening. Shortly afterwards the servant-girl heard a noise, went out, and found the unfortunate gentleman lying on the ground, he having fallen from the balcony into the yard. When picked up (says the Murray and Hume Times), Dr. Hope was conscious, but he could give no account of how the accident occurred. During next day he got worse, Dr. Cobbett was sent for, and attended him until the time of his death, which occurred on Saturday evening. An inquest was held yesterday by Captain Brownrigg, when a verdict was returned to the effect that Cedric Hope had died from concussion of the spine, caused by the accident.

Transportation to NSW ended officially in 1850, and to VDL (Tasmania) in 1853. However the Swan River Colony (WA) accepted convicts from the early 1850s right up to 1868. So seems most likely he came here to WA.

This one aboard 'Clara' in 1857 seems to fit -

Mann John 4385 [sentence] 15y [age] 35 Lewes 02 07 1855 [crime] House breaking & larceny

He was married with 5 children, and a farm labourer. Lewes is where the trial took place, on July 2nd 1855. Does that fit?

Chris, a John MANN died in WA in 1889 aged 78...?? Age is a bit out. May not have much info on the certificate (reg 249).

Can't see a WA marriage for him. Do you know what his wife/chn's names were from the UK? Maybe they came over too (though this was a rare thing).

He may have gone interstate from WA but seems unlikely.

Lizzie (elizabeth) MacDonald emigrated to Victoria, Australia with her husband Allan MacDonald and her father Edmund Gifford in about 1919. They were from Banffshire, Scotland.
Lizzie and Allan didn't have any children when they sailed for Australia ... i don't know if they had any in Australia.

Lizzie MacDonald died on the 25th May 1927 at Wangaratta,, Victoria aged 38

Edmund Gifford died on the 9th June 1929 at Tatura, Victoria aged 74
