Hi Cherilyn,

I hope you can help. I am looking for 2 brothers John Wynne Teagle b 1816 & Smith Teagleb 1821 who were both transported to Australia in 1843 on the Maitland. Their parents were Thomas Teagle and Barbara Wynne they were from Broughton , Buckinghamshire. On Trove I saw a marriage of Johns daughter in Tasmania.

This shows John Wynne TEAGLE d. 1874 Hamilton, Tas.

Both were sent to Norfolk Island on Lady Franklin.

The above site has their indent records etc (page 174).

Shows John was 28 and Smith 24, both Protestant; John was married with 2 children and Smith was single. They were charged on 11/3/1843 at Beford assizes with stealing a watch and 5 shillings. They each received 21 years (how harsh is that, don't even get that for rape or murder these days!). John's wife shown as Mary, mother Barbara, brother George and sister Mary (if I am reading it right).; native place Broughton, Bucks. Both received reports of good character.

Please could you see if you can find any record of a Bertram Hope arriving in Sydney NSW. He was born in Carlisle Cumberland England in 1854 and married an Amy Toogood in Sydney in 1885 and died in 1894, presumably Sydney! He does not appear in any censuses in UK so could have emmigrated when quite young.

Amy remarried in 1896 to Percy Nottage CHRISTIE (1865-1940) (marr reg 394, Sydney). He was chief mechanical engineer for the Sydney Harbour Trust.

They had a daughter named Myra Nottage in 1897 in Ryde. She married Godfrey E KELLY in 1923, and died in 1977.

Amy died on 16th October 1927 in Darlinghurst, Sydney (reg 17366), daughter of Alfred & Henrietta.

Occupation farmer, age 24; mother's address in Beecroft NSW. He was part of the 12th Regiment Light Horse.

There is a letter on his file from Mrs Lola Hargraves of West Ryde, his daughter, applying for the Gallipoli Medal for her late father. Unfortunately it is not dated but must have been after 1947.

Thanks for all that Cherilyn. That's brilliant. Don't know why I keep having relatives that leave no trace of getting to Australia!! Very frustrating!!
Bertram's mother was called Marianne Castle, although I have seen it written as Mary Ann several times. I don't think any other family member came with him. I have just discovered about him actually as I came across a descendent of his via ancestry and I contacted her. Apparently he had been ' thrown out ' of the family but they do not know much about him. Sounds like my Airy relative from the same time period!!
I'll pass your info on. I don't know how much she knows.

Thank you so very much for the above links and information. There was so much more information there that I did not know. I did find Smith Teagle's marriage in 1852 which was under Teagle Smith. I will look at the other links that you have given me. You are a gem!!

Ancestry shows him in several census of Australia up
to 1940's but I do not have worldwide membership so
cannot see the entries. He was born in England around
1870.

His WWI enlistment suggest his mum remarried:

Birthplace as Clifton, Bristol, Glostershire. Occupation furniture salesman, age 43 in Sep 1914. Next of kin is mother Mrs. E. J. Wilmot address is 29 Lesser Avenue, Clapham Common, London. He was a sergeant.

Interestingly, there is a note on his dossier that states he died 23/8/1952 and that his "war medals, medalions and miniatures" were handed in to the Melbourne Police to be handed to the Repatriation Dept (AIF) for safekeeping as "there are no known relatives".

Herbert married widow Florence Marie SANDERS (nee BRAITHWAITE) in 1921 in Victoria (reg 871).

She died in 1944 aged 62 in Burwood Vic, daughter of Arthur BRAITHWAITE & Marie PENNEFATHER (reg 2105).

Florence's first husband, Walter Sherwin SANDERS, died 24th June 1917 aged 47. They lived at East Brunswick Club Hotel, Lygon St, East Brunswick.

Thank you so very much for the interesting information
you gave me re Hebert Harril Babbage. He was uncle to
my Aunt's mother(Clarissa Babbage) I as doing some research
for my Aunt by marriage who is almost 86. Herbert came
from large family so I am sure he had lots of relations who
would have loved his medals. Thank you so very much for
