Hi Simon,

Don't worry, we haven't deserted you! - Had to involve myself in a few 'family things' over the past few days but have still been looking 'on and off'.

Not found anything more that I can be sure of to post yet though.

Morning Everyone.

I have ordered the Birth cert for Eda Whittaker (JUNE 1874 / OLDHAM / 8d - 618 )and the marriage cert for Edith Whittaker and William Joseph Reid ( SEPT 1892 / SHEFFIELD / 9c / 590 ) this morning.

If all goes well i should have them by the weekend, fingers crossed.

We will see what they say, can't wait, i would like to say it will put an end to the sleepless nights but most likly it will through up more spanners to be placed in the works!!

Just a thought! when Frances Donley was living in Sheffield and it said sister in-law, and the Reids were at that address, is it possible she was a sister in law to someone else!

I havent time to read through this thread at the moment but just something to think about

sister in law and brother in law were sometimes a term used for 'step' children.

Not knowing how old she was (Im sure its here in thread somewhere!) I cant comment but thought I'd post this before going to work

Just going off at an angle here, but i don't want to start a new thread!!

From what we have found about Frances she had a brother John Donley born Sep 1881 9c / 406 Sheffield, i know we have him in the thread living with his mother Sarah!! at 20 years old, what i can't find is a marriage or a death, can anyone be so kind as to see if he joined the services as it was comming upto ww1.

I was just wondering what John went on to do, WW1 Carter, i need to find out what a carter was, i think it will be something to do with the steel industry transporting as most of the Sheffield men stayed at home as they were needed in the Steel works, it will be good to find out.

I know i can't wait, and i keep telling my kids that Christmas will come when it comes!

Hi Dea,

Your good, i was looking on the net and all i got was Mr carter!

Well he pushed stuff about, not really front line combat is it!, none of my famliy was front line due to the steel industry apart from oh no dare i say it, Frances husband John Rochford who reportedly lost his arm in the boar war, so he told my mum but i can't find that out and i have tried.

No Simon, sorry I may have confused you. 'Carter' was his occupation before joining up!

He was a driver of some sort in the army, because I can see he had training to do this

just a note;

The Thomas Ward firm in Sheffield at the time of WW1 had to draft in circus elephants to transport their goods as the horses were used for the war!

A carter is what Dea told you; this could mean they did the job of horses (on a smaller scale of course) or they could be selling wares out of a cart
