Memorial details Church/Graveyard KILBRIDE Description of Church/Graveyard Situated about a mile south of Newport on the road to Westport, there are church ruins in the site. A local tradition states that there was a conflict between two Saints, St. Bridget and St. Murchan who had a church on the Clew Bay. As a result St. Bridget cursed him saying that his church would be drowned while he cursed that her church would be abandoned and become a graveyard. Needless to say this happened though in the former case it was a result of sea level changes and in the latter the 16-17th century Reformation. However the tradition may reflect some long forgotten dispute. Hi Lorraine
All I know is that according to their census entries my father's grandfather came from Galway and his grandmother came from Mayo. John Shaughnessy approx year of Birth 1821 Galway Bridget Carolin (Carlin) approx year of birth 1828 Mayo
They appeared in the 1861 census in Newcastle Under Lyme married with 2 small children.
How do I identify their parishes of birth in Galway and Mayo? I have tried the Irish sites but have not had any luck so far. I do know they were both Catholic.
Any help with look ups or suggestions - apart from go to the area (I will do one day but not yet) would be very greatly appreciated.

Hi Lorraine
I completely forgot to add in:
John Shaughnessy's father called William
and Bridget Carolin (Carlin) father was Bryan also she has a brother called Hugh with an approx year of birth 1811 - he also left Ireland for England married to a much younger Irish lass by the name of Ellen approx y of b 1836 in Clare however, no maiden name has been given nor place of marriage.
I don't know if this additional info is of use as the whole concept of genealogy is very new to me and this site even more so.
Thanking you again

Hi Lorraine
Thank you so much for taking the trouble to do this for me. Highly interesting information about local folklore as well. These are the things that make this project real for me, as it helps to create a 'reality' rather than just a collection of names (like a telephone directory) and so very much worth it.
I would love to say that it was a perfect match but I am not sure, as John and Bridget were in England by 1861 and married.
I have been told that Shaughnessy's and Carolin's are as frequently found names as Smith is in England. So maybe I was a little ambitious in asking. Thank you anyway,
julia
