Church/Graveyard ROUNDSTONE FRANSISCAN
Description of Church/Graveyard The monastery was founded in 1835 under the influence of Dr McHale, Archbishop of Tuam, as a counter measure to the activities of the Irish Church Mission. It was closed in the 1970s and all that survives is a tower situated in the middle of an industrial estate and craft centre. There is a dedication on the tower which states: “This monastery was founded by Religious Brothers of Mt Bellew of the Third Order of St. Francis with sanction & appropriation of his Grace the Most Revd Doctor McHale Lord Archbishop of Tuam dedicated to the Blessed Virgin & Our Holy Father St. Francis to the Glory of God Nov 18th 1835”. The graveyard is about 100 yards to the south.

Description of Church/Graveyard Situated about one mile south of Clifden and mostly served the Catholic community. The quantity of large ornate high cross memorials indicates the increasing wealth of the Catholic merchant class from c. 1880. The older part of the graveyard is overgrown with mature trees, which may obscure earlier memorials centred around what appears to be a holy well.

Church/Graveyard WESTPORT CHURCH OF IRELAND
Description of Church/Graveyard This church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, was built in the latter part of the 19th century and was a replacement for a previous church on the grounds of Westport House on the outskirts of Westport. The Browne memorials give plenty of family information but may come from previously published sources. Also of interest is a list of benefactors titled ‘Benefactions to the Parish of Aughaval (Westport)’, the donors and dates of donations are: Richard Livingstone 1833, George Clendenning 1843, Thomas Valentine Clendenning 1847, William Livingstone 1877, Rev Arthur Guinness Livingstone 1885, Lord John Browne 1892, William Livingstone 1894, Henry Darling Livingstone 1896, Marquis of Sligo 1897, 1905 & 1915, Susanna Kirkpatrick 1900, Power family 1905, Rev A. Livingstone 1917, W. Bourke 1930, W.H. Darley Livingstone 1953, Mrs John Hanbury 1956, Miss S. Kirkpatrick 1961, Miss K. Denniston 1965. The graveyard is across the road, the earliest memorial is dated 1877. There is a broken shaft with “died/ 4th June 1896/ age/ 9 years/ and/ 1 month”.

Description of Church/Graveyard The church is dedicated to St. Catherine. One memorial of maritime interest is to Mathew de Bille, it also indicates the presence of a Volunteer Corp in Newport from 1782. This tragedy has been covered in a recent article in Cathair na Mairt. From a sculptural perspective the memorials to Maria Browne and Hugh O’Donel are unique as they include busts of their faces. These interior memorials can also be found in JPMD vol. I pp. 452-456.

Description of Church/Graveyard According to a plaque the local residents to commemorate the 150th anniversary of its first foundation in 1837 rebuilt the Roman Catholic church. It is likely that burials date from this period. In the porch is a portrait of The Very Rev Peter Daly P.P.V.G. and Chairman of the Galway Town and Harbour Commissioners, 1791-1868. The graveyard has many ornate box tombs and memorials and indicates that it served the emerging Catholic gentry and merchants of the Town as well as the local agricultural community.
