Hello Lorraine,

Could you possibly look for any Crowley's for me? I know of an Edward Crowley living in Mayo, I think he was born in the 1840's but not too sure. I think he died around 1900 but again, can't be sure of that and I have no idea where. All I know is my Crowley ancestors came from Mayo. Sorry to be so vague! Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,
Michelle

Church/Graveyard SPIDDAL
Description of Church/Graveyard This graveyard is the biggest in western County Galway and in the words of Walter Fitzgerald is ‘thickly covered with large limestone slabs’. The majority of memorials lie flat and while erosion was a problem most memorials were fairly easily read. The number of people who died aged 60 years is slightly suspicious. The graveyard contains an unique Mortuary Chapel that is blocked up. It has a plaque that states: “This chapel was built in 1776 at the expense of Stephen Martin Gentleman”, further details below. Walter Fitzgerald published three memorials in J.P.M.D., 1898, vol. 4, pp.59-60. The current church was built in the early 1900s and has no pre 20th century memorials. There are two new graveyards to the east and west of the village.

Church/Graveyard OUGHTERARD OLD
Description of Church/Graveyard The graveyard is about a mile south of Oughterard village. The enclosed church ruins were badly overgrown and it is likely that memorials were undiscovered. Other flags were grown over with grass, moss and ivy and thorn trees. Overall about 10-20 memorials remain to be discovered. The Church of Ireland community were buried here prior to the opening of their church in the beginning of the 19th century. T.U. Church/Graveyard KILMEENA OLD
Description of Church/Graveyard This graveyard is situated about two miles east of the Westport to Newport road. The new church and graveyard are about 2-3 miles west of this site and have no pre 20th century memorials. However the latter have some fine modern Celtic crosses to the O’Malley family with symbols of the Crucifixion as well as the O’Malley coat of arms. This type of symbolism is otherwise unknown in this part of the county and while the symbols follow the traditional pattern found elsewhere in Ireland the inclusion of a saw is unusual.
