I have 2 brothers Duncan Stewart Moore d.o.b.1865 and Henry Moore d.o.b. 1860, have them both on 1871 census living with their mother margaret as head and their sister mary aged 1. Both again on the 1881 census living with mother and father Henry and siblings.I have their parents marraige certificate wich shows they didn't marry until 1869 in Tradeston, Glasgow, my problem is i can't find birth certificates for either sons, any advice would be great, thank you jean |

Catherine and Rootgatherer, This is Duncan on the census, and you are right about Margaret's age, she does seem to be too young ,I thought if i could find the births it would confirm her as the mother. |

You didn't say that you had them in 1861 so here's what looks to be them, just in case:- |

17 doesn't seem too young to me, even now a days! |

Thanks for that Catherine, i didn't have the 1861 census, it shows Margaret's maiden name Stewart. |

Catherine, I do have the 1881 census for them. Henry senior states he was a batchelor, his usual residence was the steamship Kinsale of glasgow.on his marraige cert. |

If the 1861 census is your Henry, then his birth may have been registered as Henry Stewart if the father was unbla to sign the birth certificate. If an illegimate child is registered only by the mother, then the child will have the mother's surname. There is no reason that the child can't be known by a different name to that registered. If this is your Henry, registered as Stewart then there will be a corrected entry made when the parents married. |

I have Duncan's death certificate which shows his name as Duncan Moore formely Stewart does this sound right to you ? |
|||

rootgatherer | Report | 20 Mar 2009 15:46 |
Yes - that does sound right. So I think that you are looking for births for a Henry Stewart and a Duncan Stewart. |

That would fit with what rootgatherer said. The children being born before the marriage they would likely be registered under mothers name. |
