Find Ancestors

You'd think that would be easy enough, now wouldn't you. When I received the birth cert for Arthur Leopold Hughes this morning, 1873 Marylebone, father Arthur Alfred Hughes, Photographer, mother Antonia formerly Pilarski, I thought my troubles were over.

WRONG!!!

In FreeBMD there is a birth record for Antonia Pinfield Pilarski, who I found on the 1871 with her mother Emma, grandmother Rebecca Penfield, and sister Jessie. Also in FreeBMD is the marriage of Antonia Pilarski in Leeds - further research showed that she married George Powers.

So where in the world did my Antonia Pilarski come from, and more importantly where was she in the 1871?

I can't find a Hughes/Pilarski marriage, nor a Hughes/Antonia marriage. I was hoping getting the mother's name would help me to find Arthur Alfred Hughes in the 1871 too, but still no joy.

Any assistance would be very gratefully received.

Have you found any of them on any census? I cannot find an Arthur Hughes with a wife Antonia on any census.

I wonder if they married and lived abroad.

The address on the birth cert. on 3rd February 1873 is 17 Foley Street, Marylebone, Middx.

I haven't found Arthur Alfred Hughes nor Arthur Leopold Hughes on any census return so far.

Thanks Jean, but she can't have been born in 1891 if her son was born in 1873. I've picked up various other Pilarskis from different sites, but not one that looks right for my purposes.

Jean, I've had to discount the one with Rebecca Penfield, as she married George Powers in Leeds.

The address didn't help it seems to be a pub in 1871 run buy George Denton.

Samspade, thanks for that, I've been trying to find a photographer but must have missed that one, though I had been looking at Alfred Hughes too.

In Arthur Leopold Hughes' marriage cert in 1901, Arthur Alfred is described as Secretary to the Maharajah of Madras, but deceased.

Perhaps they were lodging at a pub when Arthur Leopold was born, though they gave the same address when the birth was registered on 15th March.

Jim, that's interesting about Antonia Pinfield, as Antonia isn't a very common name for British born girls. However, as I've said above, I don't think Antonia Pinfield Pilarski born in St Pancrs in 1854 can be the right one, because of her marriage to George Power.

I'm going crazy here.

If this one married George Power then why didn't she put her middle name?
Born 1854 says 1865 on 1881 census that's a big leap

This is getting even more interesting.

A friend is also helping me in this search, and when I told her I'd found Antonia with George Power, she had a look at the record, and found Arthur L Hughes at the same lodgings.

Now I've got to try and work out the significance of that.
