Margaret

With regards to James's death you will need to get the cert to have the details of where he was living and also who reg the death as i cannot get this info,it is available only on the cert.He died aged 78 in 1960 Q4 in Lutterworth reg area.

Vol 3a Page Number 782
Listed as James T Smith

This cert will give you answers and hopefully 1 of his kids registered the death.

With regards to the children i haven't really got the time for a huge search like that. Not only cos its the Smith surname which is very common but also it means trawling though BMD's which are not transcribed so are quarter by quarter and year by year and takes alot of time.Dealing with the Smith surname makes it even harder. On the phone directories i have seen a E N Smith in Burton-Leicestershire.There is an address also but this is for 1957 but also there is other years with these initials and 1 for 1984 in Lutterworth!I can't say if its them though as it doesn't list if Male or female and doesn't also list the 1st name just initials.

Victor K Smith also a poss in Leicester in 1951-think the address listed is a Leather Merchants.

Also a Thomas W Smith in Spilsby in 1957

So possibles but again Smith and hard to say 100%.

Margaret

You need Electoral Roll lookup for possibles of where they were and then you can look for marriages etc.You could ask on the Records Office board if anyone has these records.

Alot of people use 192.com to find people which i believe you have to pay to view records.

Also i haven't listed the addresses on here cos it should really not be listed on here.

Antigone Report 22 Jan 2009 10:04

Hi Michelle

The birth certificate that I have is for a Mary Margaret Reid, born 27.6.1904 at the Lying in Hospital in Endell St, Covent Garden. Her parents are listed as John Reid (C1879)and Mary Butler (c1880) and were at that time living at 16 Burton Crescent, London WC1 (weirdly, this is about a minutes walk from where I have worked for the last ten years!). It is probably St Pancras.

I do have a marriage certificate but this is where it all starts to get fuzzy. As I said, my mother lost touch with her mother (Mary Reid) in about 1955. She never knew her father and he is not named on her birth certificate. My mother grew up in Kentish Town (London NW5). She recently got in contact with her one survivng family member her cousin Tom - son of Thomas Reid They have both always believed that their grandparents came from Ireland around 1900 and this is why I started to doubt my research as according to my (very sketchy so far) research, John Reid and Mary Butler were both born here. They married in the Sardinian Chapel, Theobalds Road, London in 1902

Mary died in London under the surname Thompson in 1996 (not 66). She had married Antony Well Thompson just after the War. Strangely, on her marriage certificate she is listed as Mary JOSEPHINE Reid which is what my mother had always understood she was called. This makes me wonder if I have completely the wrong birth cert and am barking up all the wrong trees. On that marriage cert her father is named as John Reid (occupation Musician). My mum thinks that he was a musician in the army at some point.

Sorry if this is rather rambling. Thanks so much for reading and for helping me to unpick all this.

Very best wishes

Thanks for info.I will take a look later.Just a thought have you checked the 1911?A few of the siblings were born before the 1911.Might be worth a search on there-course its not free though so depends whether you mind spending the money.

http://www.1911census.co.uk/

If the parents came from Ireland 1900 they would be on the 1911.

A question re the siblings of Mary. Are the names you gave definite siblings or are they names you have thought maybe siblings?Reason i ask is there is a Denis R Reid 1913 with Butler mother's maiden name.

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index: 1837-1983
about Denis R Reid
Name: Denis R Reid
Year of Registration: 1913
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Mother's Maiden Name: Butler
District: St Pancras (1902-1977)
County: Greater London, London
Volume: 1b

Will wait to hear from you re siblings before i look again.

Antigone Report 22 Jan 2009 11:27

Hi Michelle

Yes, pretty sure that Denis is accurate. I think he died around 1937. Also, Edmund died around 1917 so don't know if possible to find his death certificate?

Did search 1911 briefly and couldnt find them.. Maybe I was doing it wrong

Very best wishes

Closest death i can find is this 1

England & Wales, FreeBMD Death Index: 1837-1983
about Edmund Reid
Name: Edmund Reid
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1911
Year of Registration: 1916
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Age at Death: 5
District: St Marylebone (1902-1977)
County: Greater London, London
Volume: 1a
Page: 623 (click to see others on page)

Looking at births in c1910 for a Edmund Reid this was the only match

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index: 1837-1983
about Edmund M Reid
Name: Edmund M Reid
Year of Registration: 1910
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: St Pancras (1902-1977)
County: Greater London, London
Volume: 1b
Page: 94 (click to see others on page)

So whether they moved between 1913-17 to St Marylebone district?

Going to have a look for Denis's poss death next.If you are confident Denis is correct then looks like Butler is correct maiden name?Maybe its poss that the parents were not from Ireland? The birthyears you have given me for siblings all point towards St.Pancras area.

Michelle

We are getting somewhere!!Ok i have found Denis's death and he was listed as Denis R Reid and he died in 1939 Q4 and the death was reistered in Bedford. He was aged 26 at death which makes a 1913 birthyear.

Vol Number 3b Page Number 775

Good news!!Only birth registered in 1913 or even near 1913 in England in the name of Denis R Reid is the 1 i found earlier

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index: 1837-1983
about Denis R Reid
Name: Denis R Reid
Year of Registration: 1913

Maiden name Butler so looks to me you have been right on your Mary with the Butler Maiden name.

What do you think?

I think its poss the 1st couple of children were born in St Giles cos i have also found a birth in 1903 for a John Reid in St Giles area.Do you know who registered the death of Mary in 1996?Birthyears on death records are as reliable as the person's knowledge of them who registers the death.

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
about John Reid

its a shame you didnt see them on the 1911 but it is pricey to search and also not all area are on it yet.

HI Michelle,
Thank you for all your hard work! I think you're right and this is them - St Marylebone and St Pancras are next door and the names and dates all match. I think it's possible that they weren't born in Ireland, and maybe it was one (or some) of the great grandparents. I looked again at the 1911 census today and cannot find them altogether in the areas that I would expect. Maybethey all moved somewhere else. What do you think my next move should be?

You are being immensely helpful by the way - I can't thank you enough.

With very best wishes

My advise would be to get certs...i know expensive but we need proof to ensure this is right.Denis is the link in the chain-you said you was sure he was Mary's brother and there was only 1 called Denis R on the BMD for 1913 and his death listed him as Denis R also and birthyear as 1913.His mother's maiden name was Butler also.

I would get his birth cert just to be certain and also it will show where they were living at the time and may help with the 1911.Once its confirmed they are the same parents i would then get the marriage cert for Mary and John of 1902 you mentioned to confirm their father's names.

I was pleased to find that death today of Denis cos it really confirmed to me the Pancras 1913 birth was the correct 1.

Certs can be ordered online from www.gro.gov.uk for a cost of £7 each.

I am happy to help you further once you have the certs and let me know what they show...be interested to know.

Re 1911 i had a look through the free search earlier cos i am out of credits and couldn't tell where they were.It could be the family were split up-some with Grandparents or father could have been out the night census was taken.Once we have more info we should be able to pinpoint them.I had an ancestor who i could not find on the 1911 until another area opened up on the 1911 and i found he was visting a spa in Hampshire!!While all his other family were at home in Sussex!
