Hello Margaret
I wonder whether you might be able to help, please. I'm looking for Thomas Peak(e), born about 1826. He's mentioned in an 1851 census report as being born in Oxford Heath. I believe his father was George Peake. I'd like to trace (ideally) a baptism / christening record and / or a birth record.
Many thanks
Keith

Birth records didn't exist before July 1837
You can verify his father's name by obtaining a copy of his marriage cert

Is this the basis for your guess about the father's name?

Yes, Jacqueline, that's one of them. There are also 1851 and 1861 records.
I haven't found George's marriage record yet. I'm guessing it MIGHT have been to Emily Sheppard. However the 1861 record has Clara as his (possibly second?) wife.

Hi Sylvia!
Thank you for finding that marriage. I think it must be his second (third?) as "his children" all predate the marriage by a considerable margin (1816 - 35).
I've written "his children" in quotes as I have found references to eight in census records and elsewhere but the records only show a small selection of the "children" in each record. That's always possible, of course, but it's almost as if there were two parallel families with the same family names. And the only census record I could find with a wife was Clara in 1861.
I'll look for that tree you've found and see if it provides any other hints. I found one reference to her but she was not "connected" to anyone else, I'll look again.
Thanks again, Sylvia
Keith

Brilliant, Chris, thank you!
I'm now in touch with a very helpful chap on Ancestry who has George and Emily in his tree.
Emily's death in 1840 explains her absence from the census records I have found so far.
Please can you say where / how you found the Oxford Chronicle and Reading Gazette record? My very limited experience with the British Newspaper Archive has been that searches almost always turn up more chaff than wheat, the OCR they use leaves a lot to be desired!
1st edit: I've found the 1814 marriage record but only in transcript form, can anyone find an image please?
2nd edit: I have found an image, thanks to The Oxfordshire Family History Society. Witnesses were Charles Barrett & Elizabeth Peake.
