Hi All, I've reached the ripe old age of 50 and have decided to look for my dad. I have the name Richard David Cook, my mother Sandra Mary Cook formerly Willis, they lived at 41 Elwood Street, Islington, London. The names could be fictitious, my mum died 16 years ago and took the secret with her.

Welcome to genesreunited, Jayne.

Have you got an approximate year of birth for Richard (age on the wedding certificate?)

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 21 Jun 2016 00:18

I can't see a marriage for those two names in England or Wales.

No, me neither.

Could you say when your Mother died, and under what surname, and any chance she married before Richard Cook?

I see your birth record and it's only recorded as Cook mmn Willis so reg as if they were married

Presume then they didn't stay together as you are looking for your dad

Not seeing any marriiage though

My mother's maternal surname was cook and I think she used that as there are a lot of omissions on my birth certificate, my father's name, his job, the Willis had been removed and she reverted back to Chambers. Thank you all for your help and support so far. Xx

Where does chambers come in ??

Sorry I am confused :-)

Jayne

Chambers comes from her dad, my grandfather.

You mean she was Sandra Mary Chambers and her mother's maiden name was Cook, born in 1943?

I'm assuming Jayne isn't your birth name as there's a birth registered under Chambers and Cook which would imply they weren't married.

Have you looked at old electoral rolls for the address you have in Islington?

Did your mother marry a Lowe? Not sure where the Willis comes in.

Hi Rose, she did marry a Lowe. I suspect that Willis is not a real surname and that the mystery will deepen.

My name is registered as
Constance Jayne Ann registered January 67

Have you checked the date of your grandparents marriage to see if any chance she was born before they ever married.? or your grandmother was married before ?hence the surname confusion,,,,,,,,used and known by the stepfathers surname but legally not changed,

Your fathers name wont be on the certificate unless he gave signed consent and was present on registration.

Thanks Kay. My grandparents were married at a very young age and all their children are there's. It's just mine that are weird.

What about her siblings? Do they know anything?

Were you adopted by any chance and have an adoption file? I ask because your birth registration implies there was some name change at some point.

Jayne how did you learn of Mr Cook's name?

Your mother could have taken the surname Cook without any marriage if she lived with Mr Cook...perhaps she registered you without his consent and he had a right not to be named on your BC if he disputed parentage.especially at that time as no DNA exsisted and a blood test wasnt taken as a fact especially if a common group.

Jayne Report 21 Jun 2016 22:38

Kay, Mr Cooks name is on my birth certificate, on the side if it there is omissions where sections were asked to be removed by a declaration signed by my Mother and Grandmother (who's maiden name was also cook) xx

Kay???? Report 22 Jun 2016 06:40

If it was found Sandra had lied on registration and it came to light if you were adopted as your birth certificate had to be surrended it may have caused problems in getting true facts, also as Mr Cooks name also appears his permission would have been sought, which may not have been possible.

It may even be a simple case that a mix-up of surnames on registration took place and a request to have it corrected needed the declaractions made to satisify the General Registrar the declared facts were true.
.
Because a birth entry cant be taken out of the GRO index a new entry has to be made with correct details and a re-issue of birth cert has to be made with corrections that is one reason why yours shows this.

The only GRO entry that is seen to be taken out completely is an annulled marriage.
