I was looking for a birth and found two on the same person it looks like it has been
put in one name and changed how do i find out out which is the right one can you help me please very confusing thank you for your time regards jean x x x x

Which name is changed? The surname? If there are 2 surnames it probably means the parents weren't married.

yes it is the surname and i do know the parents are not married so if she has put down her maiden name first and then put the farther down later witch one is it how
will i know witch one is his correct birth certificate jean x

There will only be one cert...do both registrations have the same numbers?

yes they are both the same numbers just different last names so how do i
tell witch is the right one i thought if you register in one name that was the name you are born with and that is your true name at birth very confusing i do thank you for your help regards jean x x

just had a look at both registrations and are both the same.
the mother has put the child in her name then the fathers name after so witch is the true one the first or second one and how can you have two certificates and how as this been changed best regards jean x x

The child is registered under the mother's legal surname. The father can also add his name if he attends the registration.

If you are looking to order the cert. it doesn't matter which surname you specify.

There are not two certs.....merely two entries in the index., reflecting the fact that the child's parents were unmarried

On a birth cert, no surname is ever recorded for the child....................

It doesn't matter which surname you use to order the cert.............you will get the only available document

The cert will show the child's forename(s), and the names of both parents..................

Not sure what you're trying to prove......................

what im trying to say is the mother had no intentions of getting married when the child was born could she have put him down in her name and not named the father

A friend had a child with her partner 22 years ago. She had no intention of marrying him, but he acknowledged the paternity.

Consequently the index shows the child's surname as that of his father with his mother's maiden name AND another entry using his mother's maiden name as his surname. I've no idea what surname he goes by; he could use either.

If I were to order the certificate, I'd only get the one. It would show
Child x son of Joe BLOGGS and Mary SMITH. It wouldn't matter if the order was in the name of Child Bloggs or Child Smith.

If my friend had no intention of having anything to do with the father, she could have registered him as
Child x (no father named) son of Mary SMITH.

He would have been indexed as Smith, mother's maiden name Smith.

In our research we've all ordered certificates where no father was named.
If you haven't seen one, I'd be happy to attach a copy of a 1901 birth to a PM

My daughter has recently had a baby and she tells me the babies father is on the birth cert but she will not be known by his name....that's good as it was Italian and difficult to spell :-D

Order the cert...................and get the facts

From the PM received later last night, I think the question has been answered satisfactorily.

Jean,

No birth certificate for anyone gives a surname for the child. The child's forenames are given and then the names of either just the mother (in the case of an illegitimate birth) or both parents (again in the case of an illegitimate birth) or the names of the father and the mother including her maiden name (if the couple are married and the birth is legitimate). Where both parents are named but not married the child can use whichever name it chooses.

You don't have a "legal" name - you can use whatever name you want to as long as it is not for fraudulent reasons.

These are the headings for what is on a birth certificate:-

Birth Certificate Heading

Entry Number and GRO reference

Column 1 - Date And Place Of Birth

Column 2 - Forenames

Column 3 - Sex

Column 4 - Father's Name

Column 5 - Mother's Name

Column 6 - Father's Occupation

Column 7 - Signature, Description and Residence of the Informant

Column 8 - Date of Registration

Column 9 - Signature of Registrar

Column 10 - Name Given After Initial Registration
