The Four Streets - Nadine Dorries Kindle Price ONLY 20p

Please do not let the name put you off LOL

A heartbreaking family saga set in 1950s Liverpool, the first novel from the stunningly talented Nadine Dorries MP.

1950s Liverpool. In the tight-knit Irish Catholic community of the Four Streets, two girls are growing up.

One is motherless - and hated by the cold woman who is determined to take her dead mother's place. Will her adored father wake up to what is happening before it is too late?

The other is hiding a dreadful secret which she dare not let slip to anyone, lest it rips the heart out of the community. And yet, how long can she possibly live with it?

In the Four Streets there is almost nothing that a cup of tea and a good chat won't sort out. Laughing, grieving, hoping for better things - all this the people of the Four Streets can do together. But what can they do when a betrayal at the very heart of their world comes to light?

I read this and thought of our little thread.........

Books fall open
we fall in
delighted where
you've never been
hear voices
not once heard before
reach world through world
through door on door
find unexpected
keys to things
locked up beyond
imaginings
True books will venture
dare you out
whisper secrets
maybe shout
across the gloom
to you in need
who hanker for
a book to read

Like that Mersey.

I am still reading Lionheart, it is good but so many 'characters' that it is a slower read than usual. Luckily I usually get more read when I am away so should finish it soon. :-D

SuffolkVera Report 11 May 2014 17:25

Am ploughing through Nicholas and Alexandra at the moment. Had it on the Kindle for ages and thought it was about time I read it. I'm enjoying it but getting confused with the Russian names and all the different Grand Duchesses - I have to keep looking back to remind myself who they all are.

I know the book came up a while ago on this thread. Was it Emma that was reading it? Did it take you a while to get through it? I'm normally a quick reader but I seem to be quite slow with this book.

'Emma' Report 11 May 2014 17:28

Yes I have read it Vera and also enjoyed it.
Didn't take me too long but some books like That Woman
took me ages, why I don't know.

A Pocket Full of Shells - Jean Reinhardt Kindle 77p

In 1846 a baby girl is born to a young Irish fisherman and his wife. It is the second year of The Great Hunger and the young couple choose to remain in Ireland while family and friends are leaving. Their story takes place in the fishing village of Blackrock, near Dundalk, but the cities of Liverpool and Sunderland have a significant influence on their lives. Is their love for each other and their homeland enough to sustain them? Will they be forced to join the one and a half million who emigrate? This is the story of a young man's love for his wife and child as he struggles to provide for a family in one of the darkest periods of Ireland's history.

A lovely read

In Search of Martha Brown

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00K7A2IVW/ref=cm_cd_asin_lnk

Though born in obscurity and dying publicly on the scaffold for the brutal murder of her husband in 1856, Martha Brown as a historical character remained elusive. She has long been an object of fascination to many people, not the least being the young Thomas Hardy who witnessed her execution. This book reveals for the first time all that has been discovered up to now about Martha Brown. It also contains a full report of her trial; a discussion of the relationship between Hardy and Martha Brown; a description of turning the research into a novel; a biographical note on Lady Pinney, and an intriguing chapter on Martha's mind by psychiatrist Dr Derek Steinberg.
