Malibu Report 23 Oct 2008 00:15

Petty Officer Rchard Henry Neale, age 24, Royal Navy, died 20th March 1943, lost on H.M Stonehenge, 1st submarine lost in the war against Japan. Gone but not forgotten.

Comrades Lost.

At the graveside of a comrade, see him gently laid to rest,
Not a flower from those who loved him,
Just a wooden cross above him,
With a Padre's prayers he's blessed.

Was the bomb that fell with thunder, dropped in hate to kill his kind?
Or was it aimed, as was his gun,
In duty of a country's son,
With hate of what he did in mind.

Homeward bound a heartbreak letter, "WITH REGRET" and so sincere,
Another soldier lost in action,
Of the total just a fraction,
But to them a million tears.

On his grave the raindrops falling as we turn and walk away,
As if the angels weep in sorrow,
For a soldier lost tomorrow,
And the carnage of today.

Will future generations, of the world they tried to save,
Unite in peace, recall the losses,
Remember all the wooden crosses,
And the lives they did not lose, but GAVE.

R.Bleasedale. MALTA 1942
