No it hasn't: You will do well to notice that Wirral, as a whole, has not yo-yo'd into Cheshire since it's change in 1974 Cheshire before 1974. At the time Cheshire included the Wirral in the west of the County and places such as Stockport, Hude, Stalybridge, Cheadle, Bramhall and Altrincham in the northeast of the County. The Manchester Ship Canal defined the boundary between Cheshire and Lancashire. Cheshire from 1974 to 1998 Local government was re-organised in 1974 and many boundaries were redrawn. The Wirral became a metropolitan borough in Merseyside. Many places in the northeast of the county also became metropolitian boroughs within Greater Manchester. However Runcorn and Warrington became borough councils in Cheshire. Cheshire today In April 1998 Warrington and Halton (which covers Widnes and Runcorn) became unitary councils separate from the administrative county of Cheshire in terms of local government service provision. Cheshire still covers from Neston in the west to Disley in the northeast, Alsager in the southeast, and from Audlem and Malpas in the south to High Leigh and Frodsham in the north.

Reinforcements needed......as someone who lived his childhood in Ellesmere Port and who now lives elsewhere on the Wirral. Its all Thatchers fault. Ellesmere Port was termed as south Wirral, and the merseyside sign was opposite Vauxhall motors on the motorway. Merseyside is a metropolitan county. Cheshire is a Shire county. Wirral areas such as wallasey, new brighton and such were part of cheshire before the 1970's,and as such the PR's are kept in Cheshire Records Office in Chester. Ive had countless problems with establishing the identity of these areas...no-one gives you an answer. All i know is that the Cheshire Constabulary are in Ellesmere port, but what hasnt helped is Thatchers addition of all these metropolitan boroughs in addition to the standard shire counties.
