As a very small child I used to be called Fifi by my parents. I didn't mind it and have a funny story about going to the beach with my mother and a toddler friend called Louise. It was time to go and my mother called, 'Fifi! Lulu! Time to go!' An elderly man passing by nearly fell over laughing and explained that he had been expecting 2 toy poodles to come running, not 2 little girls. I grew out of Fifi by the time I was about 10 but don't like my name shortened to anything else - Flick, Fliss, ugh!! Most general terms of endearment don't bother me, like 'Love', 'Duck', 'Dear' and suchlike except when it comes packaged as over-familiarity. I don't like it when people call me by my first name as if they've known me for ever either. It too often fools me into thinking that my memory is fading, (or that my forgettory is better than it really is.) My husband and I sometimes call each other 'Wife' and 'Husband' which I think has a lovely old-fashioned ring to it.
