Like Rose I also lost interest but watched to the end.
Came to the conclusion that the family hardly ever
spoke to one another so very little was known about
parents, grandparents etc.

I found it OK but I have one gripe.

Why did no one point out that indentured apprentices were not, as NH repeatedly said, strictly slaves, were not uncommon and were not confined to ex-slaves?

Three years indentured was not bad as some apprentices signed up for five years. In that period and for many years both sides, there were several occupations where this situation was commonplace in the UK and other countries.

I feel that more guidance would be useful occasionally to the participant as well as the viewers.

Fully agree with you about indentured apprentices JoyLouise - as you say, it happened all over the world, and not just to ex slaves - and up to quite recently too!
If Naomie thinks it's another form of slavery - most of us - of all colours - are descended from slaves :-D

Tabitha Report 1 Aug 2019 12:58

I agree with Joy and Maggie above - got me a little cross too. a lot of UK house servants in the Uk & from Workhouses too. Nothing to do with slavery.

Very strange family - all kept things to themselves - Still not sure if it was her as Naomi slightly thick or uninformed or the actress speaking.

It so annoys me - we all know slavery happened - nothing anyone can change - so stop going on about it.

Hope next week will be better

I'm waiting for someone to have a slave from the Barbary slave trade in their tree - just to even things up! The Barbary slave trade went on for nigh on 300 years.
These slaves will be people from all over the world, and in particular (for us Brits) from Cornwall, Ireland, and Wales, of all colours and religions. :-D

Well that was interesting humour in parts Jack Whitehall very dry remarks with a quick look at his Dad enjoyed it.

Jack was sooo embarrassed! :-D :-D :-D

'Emma' Report 6 Aug 2019 11:53

The worst so far imo, thought they were
auditioning for a " comedy act "

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 6 Aug 2019 12:07

I agree, Emma.

Whitehall senior almost cracked a smile - not so much as a stooge for junior but rather dull, I thought.

I thought Jack piled on the 'shock' a tad too much and I'm not sure whether it was to rile his obviously-staunch Tory dad or to appear 'ordinary'

Quite a fluke that the family came into wealth though; and shows someone in the family cared enough to save a child from the orphanage. A nice family trait to have.

I thought Jack piled on the 'shock' a tad too much. Not sure whether it was to rile his dad or to appear to be 'ordinary'. I've never seen him perform so I have no idea what his/their act's about.

Von

Von Report 6 Aug 2019 12:39

Well I thoroughly enjoyed it ;-)

I didn't think the child was in an orphanage. The Commercial Travellers school was a school for the children of Commercial Travellers orphans or not.

"Mr John Robert Cuffley, an able and energetic traveller, was the founder of the Commercial Travellers' Schools. He inspired many of his colleagues with his vision of a school which would house, feed, clothe and educate the necessitous children of brethren "on the road" who met untimely death or became unable to earn their livelihood."
I think Jack takes every opportunity to have a go at his father's Tory ideals. He had a particular go at his parents for sending him away to boarding school!! ;-)

JoyLouise Report 6 Aug 2019 12:47

My mistake Von, I thought someone had written 'orphan'.

Yes, I spotted Jack's comments about being sent away to school, Von.

He must have hated that school and/or being sent away.

Let's hope he learned enough not to repeat himself - as I did previously. ;-) :-D

Well I am with Von, really enjoyed it, but have been a fan of Jacks for a while, I thought a bit of humour enhanced the story
:-D :-D

I am with Joan - never heard of either & not a big loss if I never see them again, what a strange pairing,.

I did like his beautiful Blue eyes - stunning.

I loved the joke when he got the place name wrong in one of the documents.

It said something like the person had gone to Bedwelty (in Monmouth) he thought it said Bedwetty & made a crack about it being being the shock that caused the action. Now that did make me laugh .

Just watched on IPlayer and enjoyed it. I think they have a carefully constructed and practised double act there, no mean feat when they are at political odds lol.

Interesting history of which I knew very little. So that was a plus. :-)

Kate Winslet.

Rambling

Rambling Report 12 Aug 2019 21:55

I am finding her irritating ( almost as irritating as I found her in 'Titanic' and that's saying something ;-) ). Jumping in with exclamations and assumptions, and over dramatised 'shock horror'.
