Super crutch.......I live in a place starting with a LL and not far from Abergele.
I also know Bala very well and when I lived in Barmouth found it usual to to give the local tradesmen the names of their profession.

Bob the laundry...Griff the barra....Glyn the milk...Jim the garage and a funny one Johnny Fish the post.....used to be the fishmonger but changed jobs to be the postman.

With the surnames it was always ....Mrs WD Jones......Mrs H E Jones etc.
Never called you by your first name in the WI which I belonged to.

Brenda,

I had a terrible headache sorting which Jones were mine, the villages are Llangower and Llanycil, hardly difficult are they?

We drove there a couple of years ago to check the churchyards, one church was a private dwelling and the other structurally unsound and we couldn't enter it :-(

GeordiePride

GeordiePride Report 3 Sep 2013 18:37

My uncle (a Geordie) married a Welsh girl and according to the marriage certificate her father was called John John.
Can anyone confirm if this name is common in Wales ? I thought it was a mistake at first.

We have, Ieu Y Glo.(Ieuan the coal).(,Len Fish(fishmonger who is really Len Smith)....Arwyn Y Clonc...(.Arwyn the gossip ..a man)
And of course all farmers are known by their surname and farm name or first name and farm name here in West Wales.
Each pub landlord is known by their first name and pub name....Never hear a lot of peoples surnames really...
I am known locally by my first name and house name or as ...The Shepherds Pie girl if they cant remember my name..Its the name of a horse I used to race....Even though the old racehorse has been dead these 30 years

Cant beat it....At least we all know who is who that way... :-D

No Owen Signs......But we do have Adrian Signs.....Very good sign writer he is too...

Oh dear...Must go back over the border now...Think I have wandered a bit far.
