Jumping in just to say Hi to SylviaInCanada (we had contact many moons ago, I'm from the same home town as you and I often mention you to staff in the local interest centre, quoting your appreciation of their service).

I went to Liverpool to do my degree as well. Picking up on the train references - I spent a lot of time at York Railway Museum in the past, doing research for a project at school. It's only since I've been doing my family tree that I discovered that a few of my ancestors worked on the railways, my gg grandfather was crushed between two carriages at Glodwick, inquest report was in the Chron.

Yes, I very much appreciated the help the Local Centre gave me.

We've also spent time at York Railway Museum on trips back to the UK.


Strangely enough, my gt grandfather was killed in 1877 when he fell out of a train carriage near Park Bridge Station in Oldham. He was taken back to Clegg Street Station where he died of massive head injuries.


The Coroner found that "someone" had neglected to lock the door on the outside of the carriage (away from the platform side), and it burst opened when gt grandfather opened the window and leaned out to see how far they were from the station.

The newspaper report shows that the Coroner suggested that the family might have a case against the railway company for "negligence"

Doubt they had any money to start such a case though!!

The inquest report however was not in the Chron .................. it was in an obscure newspaper that was only published for a couple of year!


I was rather upset earlier this year to read that my old high school had been demolished :-(

It was not the BBC thread that upset me. After all, we have seen that before many times and it usually makes me laugh too. You see my response on first page - quite friendly and determined not to take the bait (which may or may not have been in my imagination)

Sylvia says I was over-sensitive. Well, if you saw where I sit and saw every remark you make on any thread being followed by a clever put-down, you might get a bit sensitive. There were 8 posters commenting on Syria thread - yet my posts were singled out. It is the same on every thread. I have tried to be nice, tried to be conciliatory. But it continues.

I had enough today. And the fact that Errol seems to have got so much support is of no consequence to me. I am sure it is good for him.

I bear him no ill will. And I will try even harder to ignore him from now on. And trust he will have decency to leave me alone too.

I can't be bothered looking....... but do I get a prize if I guess who reported?

Sylvia, what happened to your gt grandfather must have happened in the same vicinity, my gg granddad was taken home, rather than to any hospital (something else to research) to die as a result of his injuries. Which school was demolished? P.M. me if you wish. So much is changing in your home town :-(
