By the way do you know from beginning of July if your house is empty you pay the full Council Rates?? Son emigrated last year and could not get house sold he had a bit of furniture in so paid rates ....it was cleared out last week in June so I phoned C to tell them ... got letter abt 30th June ... ok no rates to pay ..2nd July letter saying full rates were now payable ...OK some of services could be used like fire / police but maybe a discount? As it was sale went through on 11 July . |

There are plenty of people out there with must smaller reserves of money who would not dream of withholding payment of taxes. |

JohnLovesFletcherofMadeley so nice to come back from my shopping and find that you are falsely accusing not only me, but also eRRolSheep, of saying you have hijacked this thread, all I will say is that your accusations are beneath contempt - I will say no more because I have no intention of playing your silly games :-| |

I haven't read the news reports, only this thread, but if the lady in question has an NHS pension she presumably also has a bank account. |

John, this is more of a moral issue than a financial one. |

I can see a bit of both sides here. It is 'right' to pay your bills if you have the means to do so and I would always do that. Some have had the income and inheritance in their lives to have been financially comfortable and able to pay their bills later in life, but chose to 'live now and pay later', tomorrow never comes. It does seem unfair that they have had their cake and eat it as, when their money has gone, they get their bills paid for them, yet those that were frugal and have savings have to pay. That is just as morally wrong. |
