Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 9 Jun 2013 15:11

WELL!!

The saga of our one and only !! she was due 15th Sept 1958. My maternal gran lived with mum for her last 2 years and I would go to mums every afternoon and sit with gran and have afternoon tea and cakes i would bring in . We had loads of family conversations, some of which I remember but lots I have forgotten. She took ill late august and was taken into hospital and passed away. her funeral was 31st Aug but 2 days before then I was taken into hospital cos of edema and poss toxemia so hubby went to her funeral in my place.

Was in hospital for two plus weeks and they decided I should go home as soon as I had steady blood pressure for 3 readings . never happened!

We were having the evening supper on Sat 13th Sept and waiting for the pudding when all of a sudden I felt a downwards push and thought I had wet myself .
told the nurse and curtains went round and examinations made and they thought waters had gone.

Panic I hadnt had an enema so that was done eventually at 9pm !! that made labour start .

Was taken from the main ward to the labour ward and left . Well was in labour all night with back labour and NO pain relief , All day Sunday too and overnight and it was agony.
Mid morning on the Monday they were doing the rounds and one nurse realised I hadnt passed water for about 14 hours , BUT the docs were due to do their rounds so I had to wait!! the labour by then was all over the place . Eventually they catheterized the bladder and released all the pee and hey ho labour was on track again . Daughter was born at 1.30pm on Monday the 15th .

Was told she was probably a bout 8 days early altho she weighed a healthy 8lbs 1 oz and it was probably the enema that did it . when they thought the waters had gone it wasnt it was her pushing down and pressing on my bladder so making me pee.
so was in labour from 9pm on the Sat to delivery 1.30pm Monday a LONG time with no pain relief
Had loads of problems holding pee in after that as have a hydrocele that fills up so I overflow.

She is our one and only !!!!

Two children, now in their 40s. First a girl, 8lbs 2oz, horrid 36 hour labour with a forceps delivery. Second a boy, 9lbs 4oz, only 5 hours in labour because I was given a drug which plunged me straight in to the later stages.

Looking back, the birth of my son was quite funny. I was meant to have him at home but was sent in to hospital last minute. Our local hospital didn't have a maternity unit so I was put in an isolation unit. This was a long wooden hut divided into half a dozen "rooms" and each room door opened direct to the outside. It was December and very cold so anytime anyone opened the room door all the cold air came in. To counteract this, heating was turned up as high as it would go so we couldn't breathe. As this wonderful unit was away from the main hospital and open to anyone to get in, the police regularly patrolled it, particularly at night.

To cap the lot, I was taken home a couple of days later by ambulance so early in the morning that OH wasn't even up and I was deposited on the doorstep in my dressing gown, with my new born child, and it was snowing!

I didn't have any more after that :-D

Very, very interesting topic
Notice the OP and that of PricklyHolly's first post has been rr'd.

So annoying to say the least.
As childbirth is part of life wish the culprit would explain why.

Not guilty your honour is all I can say

Impressed that several men have added their comments as well - all so different from back when..............

Nanasue. I have never worked so hard in my life. Sweat was pouring off me, whereas OH was gently glowing.

You girls have no idea what we go through :-) ;-)

Why is this requested for review?! My eldest was an emergency c-section, hes lucky to be here and we're lucky to have him. Thanks to hospital negligence its a miracle hes not brain damaged. Middle child was emergency forceps, and youngest child was natural birth (not even gas and air as they didnt believe I was in labour!!)

SIL said he had never even heard of some of the language his dear wife used whilst in labour - he apologised.

He was of great help and back up to her - all 6' 3" of him was outside the door with his head poking through now and then!!!!

That is why most females play down their trials and tribulations when in the company of younger women. If we told it how it is/was, the survival of the species would be in doubt ;-)

Nolls from Harrogate

Nolls from Harrogate Report 10 Jun 2013 18:01

Ah! Well having had 6 .. after the first I said "No More" ..oh well .. first 5 all different complications no. 6 came along and after 3hrs (wonderful for me) I started pushing. Midwife told me to stop but I knew best and kept on and she turned and yelled at me "Will you stop B****y pushing .. OMG Here's the B****y head .. nurse don't scrub up just B****y well get it out" So the first words my lovely baby son heard were swear words.. Baby delivered and she left the room never to come back and of course in those days (70's) you would never dare complain in a hospital!! as for pain free labour don't believe it! ;-)

Firstborn was a very long hard labour of 16 hours. 2nd ,1 hour start to finish with very little pain. 3rd same as second and forth just half an hour with just a few twinges. No pain killers or gas and air with last 3.

Huia

Huia Report 10 Jun 2013 21:16

I wouldn't have called it painful, just mighty hard work for my two, but my mother and one of my sisters insisted that it was very painful. Perhaps my wide pelvis is the reason it was not so painful. I seem to have big bones. :-( :-D

Am I "the member who knows everything" in Opening Post. Flattered if I am, but can understand someone reporting it.

I have contributed and have tried to explain how hard labour is for us men also. Equally, I have tried to empathise with your various experiences :-) ;-)
