With the English language? Just when did 'Should have' or 'Would have' become 'Should of' or 'Would of'. When did I am sat replace I am sitting? Is it now correct grammar to begin a sentence with AND or BUT. Is it just me? Some of the letters I receive are so poorly written with incorrect spellings one wonders where it all went wrong. :-(

U.S. scientist on television referring to many species as "Guys".

It's the new vernacular and where it all went wrong was schooling in the 1980's when written English lost contact with spoken English. Or to put it another way, writing lost its' importance.

Today on this site i've seen "Elf and Safety"...I don't know if that's a joke but I would not be surprised if it was serious. And Here Here from Flying Doctor is just too funny....

I think that is a joke Malcolm. I also think texting and rushing to write e mails are partly to blame. I always used to be very particular about grammar but I am very aware that I have let it lapse since I have spent so much time on here and on line generally. But I do dislike would of and could of.

Ex-grammar school,what comes from my mouth is not what comes through my pen or keyboard.

If it is written it must be checked for grammar and spelling and I am quite proud when I let a mistake remain.

What issues form my girt working class gob is something very different.

At least Ann and Sharron spelt 'grammar' correctly! :-) lol. I agree with what is said though and hate to hear 'innit' as well.

Yes Malcolm, that's a joke! Ann, I agree with you and it doesn't bother me on here, because I can usually get the gist of a post. Would have and should have are often shortened to would've and should've (which I use and probably shouldn't) and have therefore become, for some, would of and should of.

My English teacher would be turning in her grave if she were dead, which she isn't. She's 96 and alive and well :-D

I feel strongly about correct grammar as well.
I understand text spelling for ease on phones etc,but when I hear things like Paula says...i.e..sat instead of sitting and could of...it goes against all the English we had to be so correct with at school...I also hate it when they say...like...after every sentence.....and swear words being part of everyday life....well!!!
I'm no prude,but I feel there is certainly a lack of vocabulary in today's world.

as a grammar school girl and a secretary, grammar and spelling are dear to my heart - I cringe when people say "absolutely" instead of "yes" - why do people do this - do they think it makes them sound more important?

People saying "send it to myself" instead of "to me", and "myself and my partner" instead of "my partner and I"

All these apostrophes in the wrong places - you see it everywhere - apple's, orange's etc.

Less instead of fewer, the amount of people!

I instead of me. You only have to take the other person from the sentence to see if it is correct.

Oh yes, less and fewer, the number of times you even see the wrong one used even in newspapers.

Oh dear!! Someone mentioned the 'i before e except after c' guide, which is no guide at all. Many words have e before i, even when there is not a 'c' to be seen (or even scene) :-D :-D
