Eldrick

Eldrick Report 18 Aug 2012 12:28

The final curtain...

Just a couple of days before I expire again so as a farewell – for now or forever, who knows – I thought I would give the benefit of my observations of the last few week.

First of all, I must say it was enlightening to read all about the new fashion in names. It’s about time that we got away from this biblical stuff, now that we are a secular society. My friend named his children after his favourite restaurants – I have my doubts about Bigmac Costa Cholmondely, however. Doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue.

I love the ‘It was 47 years ago when Arnold Ramsbottom the famous bassoon player died’ type threads. The thing is, if he was still alive and had played at the Olympic closing ceremony everyone would be saying he was a has-been useless can’t sing for toffee waste of space who was never as popular as RIngo. I suppose there’s a moral there somewhere, but I can’t find it. Anyway, Elvis isn’t dead, he still lives on in our hearts and minds and will do so for ever. Just as well he was a drug free clean living sort of chap who was a great role model for the youth of the day. Yes, Elvis didn’t do no drugs, no sir.

Whilst on that subject, I tune into GR for the news – it gets here quicker than it does to the BBC and the commentary is soooo much better. I love the armchair experts to bits and the personal touch makes it come to life. You know - ‘My neighbors SIL had a friend who was walking down the street in the early hours of the morning…..’

It’s also been enthralling educating myself on the finer points of skip diving. I once found an old settee in a skip. I left it there because it was minging.

I never realised that mosquitoes and biting insects were such a problem. Must be a southern thing. I live in midge city here and never get bitten, but go darn sarf and everyone walks round looking like the Elephant Man ‘cos there’s 3 mozzis and a wasp on the loose. I find bathing in John Smiths is an effective remedy for itching and you can drink the bathwater afterwards. Well, depending on what your personal bathing habits are, of course. Failing that ‘Tweed’ perfume is reputed to chase nasty things away. Well, everything, actually, but let’s be positive about it.
The snowstorm of angst ridden weeping and wailing when the boards changed ever so slightly seemed, IMHO, to detract from the waves of daily positive thoughts sweeping through the ether to randomly land on poor unfortunates who have ingrown toenails and exam results due. I was just wondering if anyone actually realised that the negative thoughts are cancelling out the positive ones? There’s so much pink and fluffy cuddly stuff getting thrown around that is totally spoilt by the gnashing of teeth and righteous indignation of those who can’t get their heads round the new ‘tree’…….

And finally, it has been my privilege to bear witness to several miraculous cures, to be present when a number of serious crimes have been solved and to be educated in the finer points of feminine complaints that have, up to now, only been spoken of in hushed tones in doctor’s surgeries or post office queues.

Until we meet again on the other side, be it upstairs or downstairs, so long and thanks for all the fish.

Sorry you are going Eldrick, not reached your 'sell by date' have you? :-D

Seriously, your debates have brought 'fresh air' to the boards and you are to be congratulated on not rising to some of the provocation you have had! Always to be relied on for thought provoking, well presented views.

I hope you will be coming back.
