Quote.....Its the start again of the spring fertility festival season, and next weekend millions of people will be eating easter eggs, cuddling rabbits and saying 'Happy Easter' without having the faintest idea that it is a pagan festival hijacked by the church......unquote.

Actually, Eldrick my friend, I think you will find that millions of people will be eating Easter eggs etc without having the faintest idea that the church IS involved....... :-D

Easter is my favourite Christian festival but I wasn't offended by your post after all, it wasn't 'eggsactly' news to me.....those facts have been around for yonks and more. You missed out the bit about the Nicene Creed too.....tuts! ;-)

I occasionally get offended when someone mocks something which is very important to me but, hey ho, I realise I am a fairly lone voice on these boards........but I am a happy little 'bunny' :-D

Anyway, sorry I can't invite you to that long promised lunch on Friday at church, but something else has taken it's place...

.......now, I wonder what that could be???

I just know I will be there though........ :-D

I take it the original post was rr'd and then err....resurrected (sorry)

I enjoyed reading it, even though I already knew about the pagan festival.

I did a presentation that included the pagan/wiccan calendar and it was 'interesting to see how each festival coincided with a event in the christian calendar.

Edit to say, I love easter egg chocolate so yes I will be eating one next week :-D

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 2 Apr 2012 21:09

lol Cyn

I believe I mentioned the council of Nicea.....from which the Nicene creed stems...and I don't believe I was inferring that rabbits and eggs were anything to do with the church, as they patently obviously are not - the connection is that they are pagan, and that the pagan festivals were hijacked by the church, which is something that millions of people will not be aware, even though the facts are in plain view, How many people know the origins of the names for the days of the week?

I would hope that you dont get offended at anything I write. I mean, I could easily say that I am offended by people quoting the bible as fact, by asserting that the jesus myth is true and all that sort of stuff. But how could I be offended by anything so absurd? Equally, as a person of faith, I am sure you find my ramblings just as absurd and therefore equally unable to offend. As is right and proper.

'i am offended' is the most overused and meaningless term in common usage today. It is used to silence critical comments when there is no answer to them. It's the easy way out of a hard question. 'I am offended by that' negates the need to respond with a reasoned argument or rebuttal. Its a smokescreen, a whine. Danish cartoonists and the Satanic Verses - both totally harmless and innocuous - created a massive outburst of contrived and false offendedness which led to death and destruction. Religion reserves for itself a special place whereby criticism causes offence and is thereby silenced. It's a very old tactic and fortunately it's less effective now than ever before.

So I am pleased that you are not offended :-) I might even treat you to a hot cross bun one day. Buttered, of course.

Don't forget the symbolism of the Easter egg within the church though Eldrick............ ;-)

I agree that the word 'offended' is often used in the wrong circumstances.........I mean, someone may be offended by the way I make gravy......

I use the word 'offended' when, sometimes, I actually mean 'saddened'.

Of course you don't offend me Eldrick.......ramble on my friend, ramble on..............and I will still smile amiably..........-D

As for the Hot Cross bun.....lovely, but only if toasted..... :

Cx

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 2 Apr 2012 21:46

yeah, but the pagan traditions came first so they trump the church ones, which are, to be charitable, rather tenuous :-)

Toasted is the right way - the only way - to eat hot cross buns. Mmmm, with marmite on them, lovely dunked in coffee.
