I have just had a good giggle

You posted albury / wodonga ................. and I do know you've said this before BUT this suddenly crossed my mind:-


we spent 75 / 76 in Australia, drove through or near Wodonga 2 or 3 times.

Our daughter was 18 months to 2½ while we were down there, so really learnt to talk.

Imagine our amusement when we go back to Canada, and she started calling one of our friends, known to her as Uncle Don ............... Unca Wodonga!


I thik the reason is that OH has just come into the room talking about some files he'd found on that same Don, so he was at the forefront of my mind!

My niece in her late thirties had a baby girl. names her Bianca.
Such a pretty name I think.
my brother who is a first time grandpa thinks she is very cute.

If I ever won some money, I would like to take a trip to central Aus.
after all the rain the country has had this year, the inland is flowing, Lake Eyre is full, and the birds and flowering plants are everywhere.
It may not happen again in my life time.

I would really like to visit England too, attend the royal marriage, but that may be a little adventurous for me.
I have heard that England does cater well for people with disabilities, so it may not be as difficult as I imagine.

And then I may even be able to publish "Spooky but Satisfying"

ps I was emailed a photo of baby girl, and she really is cute!

I have just read about Allan's issue with board names. and read the gr email he was sent. about changes to the board names soon.
I really hope they dont mess with Moonbi.

Moonbi is the name of an aboriginal tribe, from the area if South East Qld.
It was the name given to the school sport etc house, that I was put in when I started High school.
It has given me good luck down through the years.

I think it very likely that they are going to inssit in some way that every one has a board name ...... after all, there are so many forenames in common that it wouldn't work to identify posters


Unless they want to have forename and surname.


Then you'll just have people changing how they register.


If you click on my name you'll see that my surname doesn't show at all :)))

yes, its a hard one to work out.

Especially on a genealogy site. Where people want to be found, but not by the whole world.
so they must use a board name to protect their identity. revealing themselves only to those who can decode the facts.

and that what family historians find themselves doing; decoding


and then again who is to say that anyone registers on GR in the correct name.
for men it seems more simple.
women need to decide which name they would use, their birth family name OR.........other.

Pity that europeans never had a naming history like the asian families we know.
A girls name stays the same all through her life. A married lady never takes on her husbands name. but girls born are given their father's name. Easy!

the Scandinavians also have that neat naming pattern where -dottir or -son is added to the ?father's name


but it then becomes more complicted as the generations pass.

yes I guess either way has its complexities as one moves through the generations.

A little bit of info re names in Spain.

With roots in the middle ages, Spanish surnames have been around since the 12th century. Hispanic surnames can be especially important to genealogists because children are commonly given two surnames, one from each parent. The middle name (1st surname) comes from the father's name (apellido paterno), and the last name (2nd surname) is the mother's maiden name (apellido materno). Sometimes, these two surnames may be found separated by y (meaning "and"), although this is no longer as common as it once was. Recent changes to laws in Spain mean that you may also find the two surnames reversed - first the mother's surname, and then the father's surname.

Origins of Hispanic Last Names
Spanish surnames developed from four major sources:

* Patronymic & Matronymic Surnames - Based on a parent’s first name, this category of surnames includes some of the most common Hispanic surnames. These Hispanic surnames are often formed by adding an -es, -as, -is, or -os (common to Portuguese surnames) or an -ez, -az, -is, or -oz (common to Castilian or Spanish surnames) to the end of the father's name. (Leon Alvarez - Leon son of Alvaro).

* Occupational Surnames - these Hispanic last names are based on the person’s job or trade (Roderick Guerrero - Roderick the warrior or soldier).

* Descriptive Surnames - Based on a unique quality or physical feature of the individual, these surnames often developed from nicknames or pet names (Juan Delgado - John the thin).

* Geographical Surnames - The most common type of Spanish surname, these Hispanic last names are derived from the location of the homestead from which the first bearer and his family lived (Ricardo de Lugo - Ricardo from the town of Lugo).

Is not as confusion as it reads!!!

Annette, Lottery prizes can be a few million or £10, the most we have ever won was £50. Don't really know what I'd spend it on if I ever won the big one. I'd definitely see all the children, grandchildren were OK although both children already own their houses so it would be more making sure the grandchildren had houses now or in the future. Set up trust funds for them etc I suppose, give some to charity, buy a new car. Interesting. OH for one year had a job that brought in a lot of money and we found that we couldn't spend it as there wasn't anything we really wanted. I suppose we are either lucky or our wants are not excessive.
