Ozi

that looks good

Mary A Simmons was born ca 1857, looks like Cawnpore

The Siege of Cawnpore was a key episode in the Indian rebellion of 1857. The besieged British in Cawnpore (now Kanpur) were unprepared for an extended siege and surrendered to rebel Indian forces under Nana Sahib, in return for a safe passage to Allahabad. However, under ambiguous circumstances, their evacuation from Cawnpore turned into a massacre, and most of them were killed. Those captured were later executed, as an East India Company rescue force from Allahabad approached Cawnpore; in what came to be known as the Bibighar Massacre

Date of the Siege of Cawnpore was June 5-25, 1857

Now, I am NOT suggesting that the Simmons were in Cawnpore at the actual time of the siege ...... it looks as though it might have been very surprising for them to have survived. BUT they might have been stationed in Cawnpore prior to the Siege, and that is where Mary Ann was born.

Dutch which cemetery have you tried? you know there is the Royal Military Academedy Cemetery in Sandhurst, Camberley also...I don't know if 'civilians' were ever buried there but it may be a possible if she had a military funeral as you say.

Why not write them a letter to check?

I wouldn't worry on place of birth too much Dutch, the rest ties in pretty well, often people say where they first remember living rather than where they were actually born,

Nudge up for reference , records

dutch Report 30 Jun 2010 18:39

Have just had reply from History centre Surrey, regarding Mary he said if she went for tea with Queen Victoria ,then it implies that she had some connection with one of the regt of the British Army stationed in India 1857-8,its probably more likely that she was an officers wife or relation rather than non commissioned officer or odinary soldier,he said to get her death cert ,all the records are held in Windsor Castle in the Royal Archives,so now got to fathom what to do?
