Searchers please help ! :))

This is a copy of the letter Dutch has emailed me...it is in small print so am typing up the important part. It is from a newspaper dated 1927...Islington.

"Mrs Ann Shaw's connection with the British Army ....her late father John McLaughlin served for 21 years in the 58th foot in Wellington's time. Two of (Ann shaws) brothers Henry and john joined the 21st Scots fusiliers, Henry being killed in the Burmese War while John is claimed by his sisters to have been a buglar at balaclava.

In 1866 before she was 18 years, Mrs Shaw married her first husband,in Camberley, Sgt William tyler of the 8th Hussars.

Her 5 sons have all been soldirs, William 2nd leuitenant in the Indian Army.John was a sargeant in the South African forces.Charles who was killed in the retreat from Mons,a private in the 1st North hants reg. Frederick a private in the Black Watch and Francis a private in the 13th London regiment.

Her four daughters were all born in barracks and married soldiers. Her 3 sisters who also followed the colours saw many hardships as she did.

one sister mary during the Indian mutiny risked her life crawling over bodies to take water to her husband. She was buried at Camberley with military honours."

Further to this Dutch has just sent me a copy of the marriage cert Ann to William Tyler (Soldier) farnham 1866...definitely has father as Henry McLaughlin (labourer).

Any help on this would be appreciated!

I've been trying to find one of the sons on military records to see if there's a clue there but I don't know if they are Tyler or Shaw.

Rambling Report 17 Jun 2010 21:11

Thanks K...there just seems to be a discrepancy somewhere which I can't find an answer to? If as the article says she was under 18 in 1866 marriage....it doesn't give much leeway...i'm still not convinced that the second marriage to Samuel Shaw is right because of the father's name being Henry rather than John?
