Jane, I had to pop in again to see if the twisty sticks have been found anywhere yet ! I remember that I just used to pull the wrapper down a bit ,& a bit further each time I wanted some more ! seemed to me that they lasted for ages !
I also liked aniseed twists, and do you remember clove balls ? colured balls smelling strongly of cloves & if you left them in your pocket (to get all stuck to the paperbag!) your coat smelled of cloves too !
Woolworths used to sell a quarter of "whipped creamy bon-bons" which I loved....& they were softer that the bon-bons you can buy today.
oooh, and do the hot roasted salted pea-nuts that Woollies sold count ???
and I was a Spangles fan as well !

Thinking of the dim and distant past before the war. Does anyone rember the Golliwog toffee, a wrapped large single toffee bought for a farthing?

I liked aniseed balls, brown with white layers so you kept taking them out of your mouth to see what colour you were on. Loved the chewy liquorice blackjacks and toffee whirls with the white swirl in them.

No wonder I had to have lots of fillings. lol

hi all. I hate, hate, hate liquorice, aniseed and any thing banana flavour! I love fizzy sweets especially the really sour ones!

Christina ,that wrapper used to get more sticky the further it went down the stick.Would suck so far then wrap it up until the next time .I would always twist it up at the top again lol
I don't think they can exist any more.
What about sticks of rock from your holidays??? I used to smash them with Mums rolling pin so there were chunks and it used to glue your teeth together lol

me Report 27 Oct 2009 21:11

Christina

Christina Report 27 Oct 2009 21:26

oh Jane, I know what you mean !!
AND I also broke up rock with mums rolling pin ! lol ! lol !
It`s making me smile to read your comments , so much like mine !
I liked sherbet lemons.....I used to try to suck the sherbet out of one end , leaving the lemon to eat last !
Raspberry Ruffles !!! now, they were expensive, but on the rare occasions I got one, mmmmmmm !
At Christmas we always got a little tin of Blue Bird toffees....I had quite a few empty tins once, each with a lovely picture on the front ! and Mum would buy a slab of toffee in a tray, with a little silver hammer to break it !
there was a plain toffee & a nut one.
( I believe they have brought these back again !)

I like most sweets but prefer chocolate. Not too keen on jellies or Turkish delight. I especially like sherbert lemons murray mints and I am rarely without a packet of extra strong mints. Love toffee but these days steer clear of it because my teeth wont stand it. With boxes of chocolates prefer the hard centres. Are those enough hints for you Keith???
