OH has just spoken to DiL on the phone. Apparently the bleed on the brain was so severe that they are not planning any further treatment, he is to just have palliative care until he passes away, they have lifted the amount of sedative, not sure if he will remain on the ventilator, I would guess not. So please send your thoughts that he will have a peaceful and quick passing. (DiL says he is sooo stubborn that he will probably hang on for ages!!!! DiL is going home tomorrow as her Mum has her friend and her sister staying. She will go back up when the end comes as her Mum will need her more then.

Thank you all, in a way I think it is a merciful solution for the poor man as goodness knows what state he would be in if he did come round, i guess there would be too much brain damage. And hopefully he has not suffered (although unfortunately we can't really know that, just hope) I think diL has accepted it although of course she is sad, but she wouldn't want to see her dad in a vegetative state.
