They'd save a considerable amount of money if they stopped sending their ridiculous forms regularily to people who really aren't going to get better-after eight years & probably three trees worth of paper I am now "Indefinite",the relief is immense.I too have "invisibles".

Three things . Lunchtime news today, 18% of 16/17 year olds do absolutely nothing.
2. Watched the programme last week. I know they only pick odd cases but I thought it was disgraceful - particularly the attitude of that tall woman even worse perhaps than the old couple who put so much effort into cheating the system.
3. If the department "checked properly" on claimants, there would be howls of "gestapo". They have to strike a difficult balance.
Best wishes to all Happy days

The benefits system does need shaking up -

Scrap child benefit for those earning over a certain amount - I remember when it was introduced way back the Queen claimed it for Edward.

Scrap all benefits for non British Nationals unless they have paid tax into the UK for a minimum of ten years.

Encourage all those who are able to work to do so but also provide practical help to those looking for work - I was out of work last year, I was offered an initial job assessment and asked for help with paying for the train fare - I was refused, the job was with the DWP in Jobcentres!

Be honest and tell the International Olympic Committee - sorry but we can't afford to host the 2012 games we have our people to put first - but hey that wont happen

My daughter is on invalidity benefit, which is a pittance. She has tried for a couple of years to get onto income support as she would then get her rent and council tax paid, and her fares to Queens in Nottingham , which cost £70 return. She has a medical every year even though her condition is terminal. She has been turned down twice for DLA.

They have told her that because she has worked since leaving school she is not entitled to income support. Invalidity is slightly more than income support but she has to pay part rent and part council tax and only gets a third of her fares returned so is much worse off.

To add insult to injury 3 weeks ago she had to attend her local job centre to explain why she couldn't work.

The young man who interviewed her was very apologetic and said it was now a Government directive.

By all means let the Government sort out the benefit system but this time GET IT RIGHT so that the most vulnerable and ill get their proper entitlement.

Stop all payments to the lazy b*****s who refuse to work.

Rant over.

Jean.

Deanna Report 19 Jul 2008 17:56

Jean, people who have terminal illnesses are paid out immediately... so I would tell you girl to reclaim.

My son was told that he did not have enough stamps for one particular year to qualify for any invalidity.
He took his payslips up to them!!
They seem to be trying ANYTHING to save a bit of money.... don't let them save it on your daughter.

Thanks Deanna. I didn't realise that.

I'll tell Jane to reapply. It could be third time lucky.

At the risk of being vilified I'll admit I worked at jobcentres for over 25 years. Please don't assume that it is the staff that do this on purpose, most of us disagreed and thought pointless a lot of the things we HAD to do. The whole benefit system needs a complete shake up as it is phenomenally complicated which is why it is easy to make mistakes. Each benefit of which there are a lot has different rules and regulations. Maternity benefits for example are a complete nightmare.
The reason they are fixated on incapacity benefit at the moment is that (certainly 3 years ago when I was there) there were 900,000 people on jobseekers allowance and two and a half million on incapacity benefit.
We had some very caring staff who have in lots of cases gone the extra mile to make sure people have got their right benefits and at other times been distraught when someone who really needs help dosen't qualify because of one of these rules and regulations
