I agree George.................no matter where the warning came from, it's good to think about personal safety.

here are a few of the incidents that have happened round here...........

From my local Guardian

A MIDDLE-aged couple "put up a good fight" to fend off hooded carjackers who tried to steal their car at a petrol station in Buckhurst Hill on Sunday night. 17th April 2007

TWO women were robbed of their £40,000 Mercedes Benz by two hoodies in a terrifying carjack in Snaresbrook. Tuesday 3rd April 2007

A MOTORIST who pulled over in Chaucer Road, Wanstead, to make a mobile phone call found himself the victim of a terrifying carjack. Tuesday 5th June 2007

A CHIGWELL man robbed of his car outside his home at gunpoint has spoken of the terrifying ordeal in which he feared he would be kidnapped. Thursday 4th January 2007

AN angry woman is appealing for justice after her brother and a family friend were attacked in a botched carjack. 22nd September 2006

so better to be safe than sorry...although i am comforted by the fact that i do not have a £40,000 Mercedes Benz, so as long as i park next to one at the petrol station, my poor little peugeot should be safe lol

Blimey!

Been looking through our rag and the most exciting thing I could find was a letter complaining about mud on the road outside a farm gateway.

:-)

Errr, let me ponder that one for a moment....

Car jacking, robbery, murder, thuggery, shootings, gun crime....

or

mud on the road.

Hmmm. Difficult decision.......

I'll get back to you!

lol

first thing I always do on getting in my car, even on the drive, is lock myself in - then seat belt!!

:{{{0())~}        Ian         مْر

:{{{0())~} Ian مْر Report 8 Apr 2008 11:40

Locking yourself in is a double edged sword.

I've attended RTC's where I couldn't get the door open to help the driver/passenger because they were locked from the inside and they were unconscious or too dazed to release the catches. Ended up smashing the windows.

lmao its ok ian....this weeks local paper had headline....Police Joy as Crime Falls to Lowest Ever Level......so see....its not all bad (obviously the cast from eastenders burying their OH's in Epping Forest is not included in theses stats pmsl)

Hi all,

The big thing in our area is thinking an unmarked police car is trying to stop you, if you are a female or even a lone male **you do not have to stop** you go to the safest busiest place or police station or call 999. I even drive with doors locked now! What a world eh???

:{{{0())~}        Ian         مْر

:{{{0())~} Ian مْر Report 8 Apr 2008 11:43

Eastenders....whats that?

I think they probably mean that they have changed the way they count it, lol

Ian

Websterbfc Report 8 Apr 2008 11:45

you are right ian...i dont know that locking yourself IN your car is the right answer. Lets face it, millions of us drive every day and a tiny tiny handful of people get robbed or carjacked (and most of those are here so dont worry lol)

being careful, not leaving valuables in car for peeps to see, being sensible if it is late, dark or an area you dont know, and locking your car when you get out of it are sensible precautions, but try not to be neurotic about it...life is too short, and at the end of they day if they had fun out of BMW's to nick and want mine...take it, its only a car and can be replaced

:{{{0())~} Ian مْر Report 8 Apr 2008 11:46

An unmarked police car should never try to stop you,

In any case, you have never had to stop for an unmarked police vehicle, only a police officer in uniform has the power to stop a car. And no, he doesn't have to be wearing his hat, lol

yep, swings and roundabouts.

Suppose it dependfs on the area you are driving in.

When I'm in south africa, I always activate the central locking at traffic lights or junctions.

There are a lot of tips for safe driving that most people never think about:

Never pull up close to a car in front. Always leave room to drive away.

Always monitor your rear view mirror and take note of what is behind

Attach your sat nav to somewhere below the windscreen, on the dash if possible to make it less of a temptation

Always drive in the gear that will give you maximum acceleration

etc etc etc

Websterbfc

Websterbfc Report 8 Apr 2008 11:53

and to add to those good tips...some for the shopping trip, particularly for those dark carparks.

Always have your keys ready

Reverse into your space when you get there so you can drive out

activate central locking until you are out of the carpark

hide your shopping in the boot so that when you get home your husband doesn't realise how much you spent!! lol

I would hazard a guess that these are video cars you are talking about, with detacheable blue lights and pop up stop signs in the rear window....?

:{{{0())~} Ian مْر Report 8 Apr 2008 11:57

Aha, lol

Well they arent unmarked in that case!

I would admit they are sneaky, mind, lol
