I'm wondering if anyone in Birmingham might be able to help me. I'm trying to find information on a factory that my great grandfather worked at, possibly involved in the silver/metalworking trade, either on or next to Whitehall Road. I know it was very close to where they lived because my great grandmother used to call "George, the girls are going in!" at which point he'd jump out of bed and go screaming down the stairs and out the door. Can anyone help? Amanda

Actually, as a funny aside to that story, I only know about them living so close to the factory because of the family parrot. Apparently it used to call out "THE GIRLS ARE GOING IN!!!" in the middle of the night, and then laugh at Georgie when he came running down the stairs. Good thing they had that parrot, I would probably not have otherwise known where he worked! Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Amanda

can you remember the name of the street, if you had that, then you could start looking at factories that were close to there.

I've been checking Whitehall Rd, but so far have found no factories there that may have been around in the early 1900s (1910-1920). Does Whitehall Rd still exist? Amanda

Helena, do you know that road at all? Are there any factories on it? Any silversmiths? I've looked up a map for it but there aren't any places on it, just roads around it. Thanks for looking for me!

There is a Whitehall Road in Handsworth, I think this is probably your Whitehall road because Handsworth is very close to the Jewellery Quater, where all silversmiths and jobbing jewellerys traded from.

Siobhan, I'm so glad to hear you're feeling better. Too bad about the inner ear infection, though. They're rotten. Pat, any big factories on that road that you know of? I'll try searching Silversmiths, Handsworth to see if I get anything. Thanks!

There were many big factories in that location that specialised in precious metals, have you got anymore info ??

Amanda

Amanda Report 19 Oct 2003 21:14

Sorry Pat, that's about the extent of my info. It was on Whitehall Rd, almost directly across from where they lived. I wish I knew what number they lived at, but I don't. All that knew are gone, and anyone that might have remembered doesn't anymore. He was a foreman, so I'm assuming it was a fair sized establishment. Didn't come up with much on the search engines. Oh, please don't let this be another roadblock! It took me ages to get over the last one!

Pat, that's fab! I'll check it out. Siobhan, don't think anyone worked there, but I'll ask my mum. Could be possible, not really sure where granny worked.

Amanda

Amanda Report 19 Oct 2003 22:56

Soho Works, I'll check that out. Wonder what they made there? Thanks Siobhan! And thanks Pat for that picture, I printed it off. Funny, it's not how I pictured their houses would look!
