I had an interesting find tonight.....on another thread a question was asked on how Spyware Nuker worked....another similar program that works like Ada-Ware to remove spyware. Not knowing the answer, and curious, I downloaded Spyware Nuker to try it out (against advise from my nephew who stated that most of the free downloads on the internet, including those viewer programs required by sites to view their offerings - like the census decoder.) I ran Spyware Nuker and Adaware at the same time to see if they both found the same things. Both did, however, Adaware picked up an additional 8 pieces of spyware, including a program, that Spyware Nuker did not. The additional pieces Adaware found were all placed on my computer by Spyware Nuker! So keep in mind, make sure you run Adaware (or a similar reputable program) any time you download off the internet and if you have computer problems shortly after installing any program, try uninstalling and see if your computer problems disappear. (You can always reinstall if the program isn't the problem.) Judy |

After all this disscussion I yesterday ran the free McAfee online scan. It found the Qhost-1 on my drive. This is the very same little nasty which I posted about yesterday on "help with popups" ( felt a right plonker when I found it). This does exactly as described, re-directing web pages to gambling porn etc. It did not seem active so ad-aware or my AV may have disabled it. There was a "leftover" in the c:\windows\help folder there was a "hosts" file this is installed by Qhost-1 and is proof that you have had it. I deleted it. If you type Qhost-1 in google/altavista etc there is lots about it. Bob |

Just to add my thanks for all the tips, especially from Judy. I just did a search for tempory files, having already deleted temporary internet files, and came up with 532. A couple of dozen looked as if they might be worth keeping or were read only/in use and wouldn't delete, the other 500 went into the bin. |
