Judy Thanks for the tip. Just downloaded Ada and it found 170 files! I will run it each week when I do my anti-virus.

Hi Judy, Downloaded from ada-ware and found 33 which I cleared, however still couldn't access freebmd successfully as the same thing was happening, so I then downloaded a spyware it detected 3 unwanted items but wanted me to subscribe for $39.99 to delete, that's now hit the recycle bin, I think I'll just have to check the freebmd results on ancestry.co.uk, shame really as I found freebmd much quicker and more info. Thanks for the head up on the ada-ware though will definatley do a daily check. Nikii

Jean Perkins: I will send you direct link for the Adaware FREE program with step by step directives to download, install and run, via e-mail.....I'm writing them up for you now. You probably won't get until tomorrow due to the time difference between us. Nicola: The directives below, if we are on the same page, should fix your problem: Fixing “Website Can’t Be Found” and other Site Error Messages More than likely you have trouble with accessing quite a few sites.....particularly getting the message "website can't be found" among a few other error messages. Try the following and it should solve your problem. 1. Go to START. 2. Click on CONTROL PANEL. 3. Click on INTERNET OPTIONS. 4 A box appears with tabs labeled across the top. Click on ADVANCED. 5. Scroll down to the sub-heading SECURITY. 6. Make sure the following has check marks next to it: Use USE SSL 2.0, USE SSL 3.0 and USE TLS 1.0. 7. Also make sure you check off EMPTY TEMPORARY INTERNET FILE WHEN BROWSER IS CLOSED. More than likely USE TLS 1.0 is not checked of and it should be. This will give you the error messages, as well as a few others, that will prevent you from viewing web sites and the error you are getting. Judy

Help please!!!! I have tried to download from the ada-ware site and it seems to work for about 30 seconds and then I get what looks like a piece of cine film on the screen with the corner torn off and the windows icon on the top corner stops. I get this everytime I try to download something. I have had the same with the 1837 viewer and the 1901 decoder. Does anyone have any idea what it is and why programmes will not download?? Answers please in simple terms and if you are kind enough to provide instructions, could you please email so that I can print off. Many thanks in advance.

Jackie and Pat: There could be a few reasons that your unable to download and you'll have to do several different things until we hit on the right "fix." You might want to first follow the instructions I posted a few messages down on this thread instructing how on to fix unviewable web pages. Then try the website to download the Adaware again. Again, I can't stress often enough the importance of emptying cookies cache, emptying tempopary internet files and Defragging your computer.....all necessary maintenance evils. Not doing the above will cause all kinds of computer whoas at some point. Doing these three things may fix the problems you are experienceing. If you're still not able to access the page, the answer might lie in the fact that you need to visit the Microsoft Updates site to update your computers. (Problems or not, everyone should be downloading from this site.) This site is free to all. Once you bring home your computer, it's already antiquated. Microsoft posts downloads that are critical to the upkeep of your computer and to keep up with new technology out on the internet. Why the instruction to update is not clearly stated in instructions manuels or by the people who sell computers in beyond me. If you need the linjk or instructions to do this, let me know. If you're unsure how to do any of the above, let me know and I'll e-mail you instructions on how to do each. Judy

JackyJ1593 Report 12 Jan 2004 07:59

Hi Judy, I did follow the instructions you gave to someone else about ticking the USE boxes in internet options and that didn't work. I had also deleted cookie cache, temp files and anything that I no longer use in the way of games etc. Computer is defragged regularly. I have also tried to update my virus software but need to have IE6 installed which I have tried to download from microsoft and even that I can't do! Computer boffs at hubby's work have never heard of anyone not being able to download IE6! I have looked all through my computer settings and can't see why downloads can't be done. Any suggestions at all would be appreciated. Many thanks, Jacky

Jackie: My mind is just a whirl wind....I keep thinking of things that will help....this one may not fix, but it will clear up some of the .tmp files and leave a little more room on your hard drive. For Windows 98: (Works with all Windows versions, path to doing is just slightly different.) 1. Start 2. SEARCH 3. ALL FILES AND FOLDERS 4. A box will appear with 3 fields. In the ALL OR PART OF THE FILE NAME field, type in .*tmp (include the . in front of the *) 5. 2nd field is left blank and in the 3rd field which reads LOOK IN, make sure it shows LOCAL DISK C. 6. Click on SEARCH. The computer will scan and then list on files with a .tmp extension on the end. You don't need any of these files. the .tmp stands for TEMPORARY and are just that, temporary. Your computer generated them and saved them and they need to be deleted, which will clear up room on your hard drive. 7. To delete them go to the top of your screen and click on EDIT. 8. A drop down box appears, click on SELLECT ALL. All the .tmp files should now be highlighted. 9. Go back to the top of your screen and click on FILE. 10. A drop down box appears, click on DELETE. 11. A message will pop up asking you if you want to delete your files, click OK. 12. The .tmp files will be sent to your recycling bin....just empty the bin.

Judy, I have e.mailed you to thank you privately for your help but also feel I must thank you publicly. I found 119 of those naughty little bugs which have now been sent packing. Computer 'no hopers' like me are in your debt. Jean.

Judy

Judy Report 12 Jan 2004 20:07

Jackie J....Are you working with Windows 98? If so, in addition to the defragging that you've done, did you do the disk scan as well? Disk scan is scanning the computer for hard drive errors and having the computer automatically fix, when it can, any errors it finds. Disk scan and defragging are two maintenance jobs that should be done one after the other....scanning first and then defragging. (Windows XP doesn't have this option as Microsoft must have fixed this clitch in later versions.) Judy
