I have a birth address of my GGG grandfather of NK Norfolk anybody know what this means? Brian

Could it possibly be an abbreviation for Norfolk? Or Not Known where in Norfolk? Or a third one - is there somewhere in the county that can be shortened to NK? Paul

N K usually means "not known".

Brian, Is this from a census? I think that means the enumerator wasn't given the village. Could be the person was away at the time and the wife didn't know which village he was born in. Crista

Hi Brian, I live in Norfolk and cannot think of anywhere that would have that abbreviation. My guess is that it is a shortened form of Norfolk. What names and dates do you have? Frances

Brian, Do you have any other names (eg.parents)? I have had a quick look on the 1801-1837 marriage index. Have found lots of Garner`s from all over Norfolk,( but nothing that could be shortened to NK) Why not ask for a look up on the 1851 census, or have you tried the 1837 Online? Frances I know his father was William also born in Norfolk no dates don't know mother. I know lots more about the family coming forward in time. By the way James was married to Henrietta Brian

I have just double checked and the only James listed with a father called William, within around 5 years, is the one that I listed. There are a couple of James's that are listed as Gchildren, so would not know their father's name. Sue:-)

Brian, think you may find that the Victorian Norfolk accent was incomprehensible if he had moved to another part of the country. I had Norfolk - Norwich on my GGFx2 census 1851 when he was in Stepney. He actually came from a village called Hethersett, even by today's standard that would probably have been pronounced something like "Herersart" and as he wouldnt have known how to spell it the enumerator probably just thought, "put nearest big city"!
