Gertrude Sarah FIELD, a widow, age 41 daughter of Walter BUTLER, (deceased) married my great grandfather William in 1903. With no birthplace, how can I find out more about her? |

William and Gertrude married in East Preston, Sussex and 2 of his children were witnesses. No suitable Gertrude in 1901 seems to be in that area. Any suggestions? |

There is a Lily Gertrude Field age 28 on rg13/877 folio 71 p1 on ancestry married to Albert Field. Kim |

If I were you, I would look for the birth of a Gertrude Butler and also for the marriage of a Gertrude Butler to a Mr. Field (can't see one on FreeBMD at first glance, but there are quite a few Gertrude Butlers!) If not on FreeBMD you might have to slog through the GRO indexes... let's hope she had only married once before! Kate. |

I have just been told that on the GRO index her death entry in 1923 shows her as 69, so there is an age difference problem here. ie born c 1854 or 1862? |

Independent means???Well on 1871 census he is a cabinet maker,and he is employing two men and two boys,so doing quite well..Providing its the right family of course. Regards Ross. |

I wonder if she did marry more than once before she married into our family. I will have to cross check some of the possible previously named marriage entries. As far as I know my great grandfather was always in the Littlehampton area so they must have met in Sussex. Something must have taken Gertrude to that area... |

Ross Thank you. That looks a very good possibility and I like your reasoning. Walter might have made his money in the business. His wife was Sarah too, - Gertrude's 2nd name. Definitely worth following this lead. |

Jim Thank you. It certainly looks as if she married Walter HUMPREY first. If she married Fred FIELD in East Preston area in 1890, I wonder why I can't find her in 1901 index? |
