Sorry, may I just butt in. There is a SHEDFIELD in Hampshire - it's near Waltham Chase, near Winchester in Hampshire. There was also a railway line close by before 1966 (easy access to London). This is now part of 'The Watercress Line' steam railway from Alton to Alresford. maggie |

Well done Tracy. Could be a child of hers or might be a siblings child. Don't think that me ordering her birth cert will give me anything more at this time, what do you think? I have been looking at the Ancestry site for the marriages between 1871 and 1873 (from the Jan of 1871 - I know he would of been single in the first quarter- till Dec 1873) Ancestry takes it's info from Free BMD - ? According to the BMD site 1871, 72 and 73 are complete for marriages. Have taken a note of all the marriages of a WILLIAM BROWN to a possible ELIZABETH (match the bride to the groom game - goody!) I will list them on here by year and place to save space, could someone please tell me which areas look a good poss as I am no longer sure of the districts. And does anyone know of a site where I can buy a map to show the old districts and sub districts?????? Would be nice to have one that I can put up on the wall........and stick BIG, SHARP pins in. Many Thanks Justine x September 1871 London City June 1872 Hackney June 1872 Whitechapel June 1872 Wandsworth December 1872 Hackney March 1873 Lewisham March 1873 Hackney June 1873 Pancras (1837-1901) June 1873 St Saviour Southwark June 1873 St George Hanover Square |

I wouldn't worry about the little girl Elizabeth, for the mo. The think we need to decide is, whether William from Sherfield is the same man as William from Sheffield and... if the William from Sherfield/Sheffield is the same man who married Elizabeth Sheppard..... and if Elizabeth Sheppard who got married in 1872 in Wandsworth is the same person who was born about 1844 in Westminster............ Depends how rich you are feeling???!! And whether you really feel that William from Sherfield is the same as William from Sheffield...... Suppose you could order the 1872 marriage cert with both father's names as checking points?? With regard to the wrong birth cert (parents Wm and Grace) - though I would also have thought there was sense in the idea that born Vauxhall = St George Hanover Square, I see that on the various census returns the people listed as born in Vauxhall and who are a year, or less, old (and therefore mostly living in their place of birth) say they are living at Lambeth!! It would be very difficult to trace Wm 1873 birth in Lambeth as there are loads, but no William RICHARD Browns!! Merry |

Tracy, I see what you mean about mistranscribed on 1851, one minute your in Westminster the next the West Indies....now that's a good one! View Record Clara Shepherd abt 1850 Woking, Surrey, England Daughter Saffron Walden Essex View Record David Shepherd abt 1844 Mitcham, Surrey, England Son Saffron Walden Essex View Record Elizbeth Shepherd abt 1815 Buckland, Surrey, England Wife Saffron Walden Essex View Record Elizbth Shepherd abt 1845 West Indies, St Margaret Daughter Saffron Walden Essex View Record Emma Shepherd abt 1847 West Indies, St Margaret Daughter Saffron Walden Essex View Record George Shepherd abt 1842 Mitcham, Surrey, England Son Saffron Walden Essex View Record Mary Shepherd abt 1846 West Indies, St Margaret Daughter Saffron Walden Essex View Record Sarah Shepherd abt 1849 Woking, Surrey, England Daughter Saffron Walden Essex View Record William Shepherd abt 1807 Fearon, Essex, England Head Saffron Walden Essex View Record Willm L Shepherd abt 1840 Mitcham, Surrey, England Son Saffron Walden Essex *MERRY a) I think that this is the same family, names and birth years match and just have a feeling that it's the same family mistranscribed (william) b) On the 1851 this Elizabeth Shepphard is down once again as born Westminster (or West Indies according to who ever transcribes for Ancestry (((()))) c) I guess I'm not gonna get any further until I order that cert, If the father's names do not match (although I won't ask for any referance checking points) then at least I can rule that one out, can't I. Oh well in for a penny...in for another £7. If you or Tracy can think of anything else that perhaps I should order along with this one, please let me know. Once again thank you both for giving up your time to help me I really do appreciate it, I say it every time, but it's true x. Justine x |

I would just order one at a time..... I'm glad you are going to try the marriage cert without checking points, as I wouldn't trust the GRO to check two names without making a mistake!! I would be forever wondering, if they didn't send it.... I have good vibes about this Sheppard/Brown marriage.....(lol I had good vibes about the St George Birth cert too!! Easier when it's someone elses money!!) How an earth did they manage to get ''West Indies'' out of what clearly says ''St Margarets Westminster''?? Merry |

Ok, will order cert today and post results when it comes. Fingers crossed.....This could be them. Yep I don't trust the GRO not after the last c*** up (pardon my asterisk's) They told me the names did not match and were going to give me a refund - but the cert that turned up was one that according to them did not match and would be refunded, leaving me to think that there was a better one that they had not sent (think I 'm making sense) Had to send it back...and then they admitted it was the right cert, but the email had been MIS TYPED with the wrong year and Vol & Page !!!!!! Turned out they were not my rellies anyway. Grghhhhhhhhhhhh. I thinks that's the best mistranscription so far from the 1851, not just the wrong district, but the wrong country lol. Maybe you should start a thread. Justine x |

Brass band playing in the background, major breakthrough:- Marriage cert had arrived...yep! Pretty certain it's them all the info seems to match. William Brown age 29 years, bachelor, general labourer residing at 1 Hope Street, Battersea Father THOMAS BROWN, gardener (matches the 71 lot from Hampshire) Elizabeth Sheppard age 28 years, spinster, residing at 35 Fords Buildings, Battersea Father WILLIAM SHEPPARD, Labourer (matches the 71 census lot) William can not write and X marks the spot! Witness' to the marriage are Robert Brown (there was a brother on the 71 with that name) L. Brown (I think that there was a sister, Louisa Brown will check that out) Marriage took place the 12th May 1872, marriage took place at Battersea Chapel, Lower Wandsworth Road. Well what do you think Merry and Tracy? Surely this has to be the one....lol. Justine x |

Oh I am so glad you think it's them as well. When it came through this morning just after 11, I was so delighted that I have just cooked Hubby Sausage sandwiches!!! (Poor thing's working outside in the cold on our extension) Anyway, he did not have a clue as too what I was gabbling on about, but, he looked pleased for me. I would just like to thank you Tracy and Merry for all the help and time that you have put into this. I would'nt have succeeded without you!! Merry, a big thank you to you for tracking down the marriage and then finding Elizabeth and her birthplace on the 71, I would never of thought of that. I have just been going over my notes and there was a Louisa Brown who I think is the witness on the marriage cert and the address for the 'Hampshire lot' in 71 was......1 HOPE STREET, BATTERSEA. Going to try and find a birth cert now for William, maybe he was not registered, but, now I have a maiden name and light at the end of the tunnel. Wish good wishes to you both Justine xx |

I have just read the marriage details again.....Battersea Chapel..........I wonder whether (assuming this wasn't C of E) they went back there for kids baptisms?? Can you tell what denomination it was from anything on the cert?? Merry |

Sorry for the delay in my reply, youngest son has a disco at High School tonight.....I thought girls took time to get ready, lol. Baptists - oh dear, think I shall have to go off and read up about these. I wonder if they were both baptists? Most probably the Sheppard side, as their son William Richard married in 'Established Church', which I assume to be C of E. So, possibly some records for me to research there. Justine x |
