First, go into FTM and save your database as a GEDCOM File. Click on File, Export file, Entire file (Or selected individuals if you want to chose who to upload) Chose where you want to save the file from the 'Save In' box at the top and finally select GEDCOM from the 'Filee Type' box at the bottom. The go back the GR and select Import Export Tree from the list on the left. Click on the Import GEDCOM button and follow the instructions. |

Just one thing - before you export it to a gedcom on your familytreemaker, click on the privatise file to make sure no details about living persons are transferred. |

As Peter said, go into the family treemaker. Click on file. Go down the list of subjects and click on privatise file. A little box will come up saying do you want to privatise temporarily - click yes. Then go to file again click and you will see export file. Click on export and then 'entire file'. A box will come up where you can choose a name for the file. Fill that in with a made up name so you remember what it is and put ged at the end (not sure why, but Im sure someone told me too yonks ago). At the bottom there is the type of file you want it to be. Scroll down to gedcom and then save. It will then tell you you have saved a gedcom. When you upload to GR or wherever, you search for the gedcom you have created with the name you chose for it. Either put the name in for the search or browse til it comes up and then click on it. On GR you just click on the import/export tree link in the margin. It will have a little box asking what file you want to upload to it and that when you fill in the box with your gedcom file name or you click browse to find it. You then click on proceed and it does it itself and you get a message saying its uploaded (hopefully!!) I hope that makes sense though Peter will be much better than me at explaining. |

I cant understand that at all. If you dont have privatise or export - Im sorry, are you on your actual Familytree maker page when you click File. You have to open your program and be looking at it as you do this. It sounds as if you are clicking file at the top of the internet page or works page, not actually on the FTprogram. You go to your FTMaker, yes? You click on File at the top left hand side? What comes up when you do that? I dont have a save on that list. I have the same program and it will list all the options. Privatize is about 3 or 4 from the bottom of the list. Click on it and it asks if you want to privatise your file. About 5 from the top, I think it has 'export file'. So do you not have that option either? |

Gotcha yes had it Open Heather, so is it export to pdf;;; Babs |

Heather | Report | 21 Dec 2005 12:02 |
NO! You want a gedcom, so you can send it to GR - pdf is a printed form of the tree. You open file, go down and click on the privatise first because you dont want living people on show to GR. I see you say you are uploading to ancestry - Ive never been able to do that as I dont have a sub to the world tree thingy. Do you? However you can put it on GR or familysearch Then go back and click on export then export entire file (I take it you want the lot). Then follow the previous instructions! Were getting there |

If it says 2005, I wonder if you need to click on update? Also, can you make your own website with yours by clicking on Internet then on create a family home page? You should have those options too. How long have you had the program? If it says just back up, try clicking on that to see if you can save it as a gedcom. However, it doesnt seem to have the 2005 features I have. So click on the help and send them a mail. |

I am wondering if the FTM2005 you have was also a free cd? In which case it doesnt have all the resources available as the full program. Can you do a homepage on the internet with it? |

Babs, If the program that you are running is the 2006SE version that came free with Family Tree Maker, then you will not have the option to export your file. You will need to go back to your 2005 version. To check can you click on Help, then About, and it should tell you which version you are running. |
