Well, if it was me, I would get the death cert for Harriet first (1864), to see if she is the wife of Robert. If she was, then I'd get Agnes birth cert, Hopeing she is their child and if she is, then you have the mum's maiden name! Merry

Marion, as Jess says, you dont need the mothers name to search for the birth record, you look for Caroline in the time span and area to find the reference on the bmd index and then send off for the certificate to see who her mum was. Plumstead wouldnt be her birth place - they are all in Plumstead because it is near Woolwich barracks. Dont even consider the school theory as that wouldnt be shown as her place of birth anyway - so just cut it all down to what you know.

OOps, just read your last message.......I thought you wanted to know who Robert's first wife was?? Isn't she the mother of both Caroline and Harriet Agnes? If not, then my apologies............... Merry

Hi Merry Monty, I was past this info on by another family member with Genes re Harriet death and birth 1864. I didn,t know they added Harriet onto her name though. You could be right in memory of her Mother.

Heather

Heather Report 17 Feb 2006 10:30

Could even be a death in child birth or shortly after.

Right, what choices do you have for her birth cert? have you found any that might realistically be her?? if so post them * doubt anyone spend 10 years in hospital, although there is a lkely candidate in the lunatic assylum in one census, but way off age wise

Merry Report 17 Feb 2006 10:32

If the Harriet who died Q1 1864 is Robert's first wife, then as long as they married before Caroline was born, you may have to accept she is Caroline's mother, if there is no birth cert for Caroline. Maybe you could try local reg office for her birth cert? Or baptism records? Merry

Heather I,m having a spot of trouble understanding all this. Ok I will give the school theory a miss. If Caroline was born in 1861 and Mothers name is not important where do I state she was born for the Certificate requirement? I sent an email off not that long ago to try and find Varoline through Baptism,s for Hampshire. Nothing found. I,m sorry Guys.

Could you confirm all the birth places given for Caroline? 1871Ilsey 1881 Hants, Hilsey What did she say after her marriage? Merry

Merry

Merry Report 17 Feb 2006 10:51

Are we assuming that Hilsey is Hilsea at Portsmouth, where the garrison is? Merry

What I am going to do is pass this one over to.. Sheila on the Coast. This is my other family member I have found through Genes. I will email Sheila and tell her to get her head round all of this. Sheila is far more tuned into all of this searching. Mind you Sheila has made many attempts to get Caroline,s Birth Cert but nothing. The pair of us have sent emails off left right and centre to various places. Also The Robert you found in the Mental Institution is more than likely the Same Robert. Sheila thought maybe he suffered from Shell Shock? Another thing I cant get my head around is as Caroline,s Husband William Whitehead born in Cork Ireland and most likely Catholic wouldn,t Caroline have to be Baptised or Christened before she could have married William.? Sorry I,m not Catholic. This is where I have to leave it guys. I must email Sheila and tell her to check all this out. Be in touch later. Thanks everyone

If we are, then that's in the parish of Wymering, Hants and there is a Garrison Church there, where Caroline could have been baptised?? That's why I need to know where she said she was born, after her marriage??? Merry

Merry Report 17 Feb 2006 11:03

Not being one to give up easily......now, let me see, Caroline either married Sheldrick, Thomas Elliot or WHITEHEAD, William George and William George Whitehead is on Marions tree and the other chap isn't...........So I'll take her husband to be Mr Whitehead, (from Cork) Back to the census....................... So (yes, I know I'm talking to myself, but I will have forgotten where we are by later on.....!!!!!!) 1891: Edith M Whitehead abt 1890 Woolwich, Kent, England Daughter Aldershot Hampshire >>>>>>Elizabeth Whitehead abt 1862 Portsmouth, Hampshire, England Wife Aldershot Hampshire Florence A Whitehead abt 1886 Woolwich, Kent, England Daughter Aldershot Hampshire Maria M Whitehead abt 1888 Woolwich, Kent, England Daughter Aldershot Hampshire William Whitehead abt 1861 Ireland Head Aldershot Hampshire 1901: Blast is that him (William Whitehead), a widower.....recorded as Mother-in-law (should be brother-in-law!!) LOL! Anyway, so............ We have Caroline born: 1871 - Ilsey 1881 - Hilsey Hants 1891 - Portsmouth Hants 1901 - dec'd in 1898 So......surely Ilsey is just a contraction of Hisley and that (by rights) should be the Garrison at Portsmouth/Portsea called Hilsea?? Merry

Merry Report 17 Feb 2006 11:19

If it was me, I would contact Fareham Reg Office (which covers Wymering (Hilsea/Hilsey/Ilsey LOL) and ask them to check the birth records for Caroline Elizabeth McClelland. But maybe someone has already done this???????????????? Merry

Hi Everyone, I have emailed Sheila and asked her to check this all out. I cant believe how helpfull you all are. I,m not giving in Monty its just I have to go to work. I do different shifts. Sometimes broken ones. I have Caroline born in Portsmouth. Born in Ilsey. Born in Portmouth Hampshire. Born in Hilsea.

Heather

Heather Report 17 Feb 2006 11:23

Well, at least we all agree its Portsmouth, Hants then! So Aldershot probably not that far away. This will be an easy wall to smash Marion.

The Lady Marion

The Lady Marion Report 17 Feb 2006 11:27

The Whiteheads you found are mine. Edith Millicent was my Grandmother. Heather this little part is for you...she may be the sister of Aunt Annie? ha ha anyway Yes Caroline died very early in her thirties and William (Mother In Law) took the girls to live with the Archards. I have 10 more minutes to spare before my ride is here.

Merry

Merry Report 17 Feb 2006 11:33

See you later then! If Fareham can't find a birth cert, then she may not have been registered. You could get the death cert for Harriet at the same time and maybe ask about the birth cert for Agnes, both 1864. OOPS NO, No, NO!!!!! Aldershot is FARNHAM (Harriet and Agnes) and Wymering/Hilsea (Caroline) is FAREHAM!! LOL Anyway.....If you get the Farnham certs via the local reg office they prob won't charge you if they turn out to be completely the wrong people!! Merry

Well thanks to Merrys hard graft, I think you are well on your way to sorting this one.
