I'd steer clear of music. Nice as it is to hear, not everyone has broadband and it slows the page-loading for viewing. Speaking personally, I hate music on websites. My PC has it's speakers turned off 99% of the time! Lx

Re ADDING MUSIC to your Tribal If you are thinking of adding music to your Tribal site, please be aware of the copyright rules that exist. I had music on mine for a short time, until I read up about copyright issues and how so many people were being sued for using music that they were innocently using on their websites (obtained from so-called Free Music sites). I have since removed it from my Tribal as it's better to be safe than sorry. If you go to Tribal main page and locate John's Demo Page there is a section in there regarding Music, how to add it, and also the copyright warnings. Some people are still using it on their sites that are password protected (as mine is) so maybe I'm just being overly-cautious about it all. But my belief is 'When in doubt, leave it out.' It's something you'd need to weigh up for yourself, though... (ps - if you do decide to put music on there, you might want to consider doing it with an On/Off button on your front page, so that visitors can choose whether to put the music on or not or switch it off when it starts driving them mad LOL)

I love tribal pages. I was very pleased I had sent photos there when all my photos were lost on this site. Thankyou very much for the paragraph tip that will make life much easier. My tip for earlier ancestors is to add a photo of the town where they lived. You can attach it to as many people as you like and it makes the tree much easier to follow. My great grandparents owned a pub so I took a photo of it and can enjoy a cyber drink while editing. Other family members have a picture of the church they were married in. I have had a couple of contacts from America who really liked the idea.

Hi, I might be thick, but I have just read through this post & uploaded my tree to Tribal Pages. I intend to return as soon as I have access and add a visitors password, so that people can see my tree but not alter it. Am I understanding this correctly, and if so, do visitors need to knowthe password to view my tree? How does this 2 password thing work. I know I am a ditzy old granny, so please be patient with me. God bless Lyn

I'm defiantely going to try tribal pages, but can i just say gencirces is a nightmare. The site seems to have been frozen for about two weeks, I have been trying to delete a gedcom since the 19th may, every time it says its deleted and will take a few minutes to be removed and its still not gone. I'm very frustrated esp as there is no online help to contact!

fraserbooks Report 29 May 2006 16:13

A gedcom is what you get if you download your tree from here. They will E. mail it to you as Smithfamily ged. and you need to save it to your computer. HTML is a code tribal pages and other web sites use to edit text. It can be downloaded from a more sophisticated programme such as family tree maker. You can also build a tree from scratch and add the prompts like <p>. for new paragraph. The double password works. If you go to the site and enter your password you can sign in to edit the tree add photos etc. If you give someone else the other password or use it yourself you can see the site or sign the guestbook but not alter the tree. You don't have to have a second password if you don't want to keep your tree private. You can put a password hint on your home page if you want to. Tribal pages has a rudimentary search facility and people can E.mail you and ask to see your tree but it only matches by name.

fraserbooks Report 13 Jun 2006 21:06

The free version lets you upload about 50 photos. The midrange version allows you about 200. (about £12 a year). It also allows you to print various displays of your family tree and export your gedcom. You can only upload photos as J. pegs so if you have something in a different format which you want to add open it in a programe like paint and save it as a J.peg.
