I know the name of my great Grandad. But i'm having problems confirming my Great Grandad on the Cencus. My Dad isn't convinced i have the right family. I know who he married. Will this help find him to confirm anything? If so wheres the best place to look... I think I'm going mad with all this.

Right, you are working backwards from your dad - so you def. know who your grandparents were, yes? Do you have their marriage certificate? That would give their dads names and occupations (your GGF). You could then tie that in with the census info It would also give an area where they married which may help and also witness signatures which could be further clues. Why dont you give us what info you have and what you want to confirm?

Tell us who, when and where he married and his name! Do you have the marriage certificate (and does your dad agree it's the right one?!). If you do, then what are the full details from the cert? Merry

I feel so guilty asking other people to look because i know how time consuming it can be. All I know is My Great Grandad was calle Ernest Sanderson married a Annie Arnold. We pressume this was in Whitby North Yorkshire. My Grandad was born in 1914 his mother Annie around 1891 his Dad Ernest still unsure. We found a family on the 1901 cencus he was said to be 15. But like i said my Dad isn't convinced i have the right family for Ernest

I am so glad to see somebody who is trying to do their tree properly by checking the information! So many people on here want to find everything on the census straight away and can't be bothered to get any certificates to check they are right! This is the reference data for your great-grandparents' marriage, from a site called FreeBMD at http://freebmd.rootsweb*com/ (replace * with .) Marriages Jun 1912 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Arnold Annie B Sanderson Whitby 9d 1024 Sanderson Ernest Arnold Whitby 9d 1024 You can now order their marriage certificate and that will tell you the name and occupation of Ernest's father, which should help you to decide whether you have the right family on the census or not. (Also it will give you the details of Annie's father, plus Annie and Ernest's ages when they got married and the names of their witnesses.) Kate.

Thank you so much i'm just writing all this down as my computer doesn't seem to want to save it. It just helps to get a few details to move on to the certificate stage. Tracy

Based on year of marriage...this one in 1901 is a possibility, but you really need the marriage cert, as advised above, to confirm his father's name. Ernest Sanderson abt 1886 Whitby, Yorkshire, England Son Whitby Yorkshire View Record Francis E Sanderson abt 1884 Whitby, Yorkshire, England Son Whitby Yorkshire View Record Kathaniel Sanderson abt 1848 Whitby, Yorkshire, England Head Whitby Yorkshire View Record Margaret Sanderson abt 1854 Whitby, Yorkshire, England Wife Whitby Yorkshire View Record Mary J Sanderson abt 1874 West Hartlepool, Durham, England Daughter Whitby Yorkshire View Record Wilfred Sanderson abt 1892 Whitby, Yorkshire, England Son Whitby Yorkshire The same applies to this one......... Alice Arnold abt 1885 Whitby, Yorkshire, England Daughter Whitby Yorkshire View Record Annie Arnold abt 1891 Whitby, Yorkshire, England Daughter Whitby Yorkshire View Record Charles Arnold abt 1889 Whitby, Yorkshire, England Son Whitby Yorkshire View Record Edith Arnold abt 1887 Whitby, Yorkshire, England Daughter Whitby Yorkshire View Record John Arnold abt 1882 Whitby, Yorkshire, England Son Whitby Yorkshire View Record Mary Arnold abt 1852 Whitby, Yorkshire, England Wife Whitby Yorkshire View Record William Arnold abt 1848 Whitby, Yorkshire, England Head Whitby Yorkshire Reg

Reg. Thats the one we have and aren't sure of. If it is correct any ideas as to why the eldest daughter was born elsewhere???? My dad seems to think the family came from Durham thats why we weren't convinced the parents were born in Whitby. Tracy

Kate Report 26 Apr 2006 23:29

Well, I still say wait till the marriage certificate comes before doing any more research on the family, but sometimes birthplaces are wrong on the census, for instance earlier on today I was looking at somebody's ancestor who was born Ireland on several censuses but then suddenly changed to being born in the Derbyshire village where he was living at the time of the census! Kate.

Tracy

Tracy Report 26 Apr 2006 23:30

I think thats my Dads line of though Kate Because they lived in Whitby then they just put that down. And as the eldest was born else where it's thrown us a bit.

Tracy

Tracy Report 26 Apr 2006 23:39

So from earlier cencus could i find out if Nathaniels place of birth had changed???

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 26 Apr 2006 23:40

The marriage cert is the only way to proceed.......with all due respect to your dad, he is probably relying on info passed down verbally through the generations....and that can get distorted with the passage of time............ Reg
