Dont think Im missing this - but wouldnt it be a good idea if the FTM had an extra notebook on it - with pages for each intial - I keep getting bits of 'possible' info which may come in useful later on - bmd and other stuff. I am bunging it on to someones notes with that surname - but I will probably forget where as time goes on. If they had a notebook you could add possibles to a page under the right initial and look at it now and then.

I thought it was such an obvious idea that I may be missing it on one of the buttons? Perhaps if we all mailed them they could do an update.

Cant you just create a 'notepad' and keep it on your desktop? I have quite a few ;-)

No Babs, there isnt a note book, Ron is talking about the individual notes for people, relax!

Yes, that would be a good addition aswell. And oh how I wish the merge facility would actually add the census details to the notes of the individual!

Heather I use the research journal for that type of thing. It creates a list and you can then tick when done. Hope that helps.

Woo hoo, what is the research journal and which button do I press? Found it! I really must read the instructions one day. Anyone else wanting to know - you click on view and then go down that list to Research Journal. Not perfect - I would have liked it to have alphabetical listings BUT I guess I could do this myself - and then add the notes about people under it - woo hoo. Many thanks.

IW I use the individual and marriage scrapbooks in FTM to hold the BMD, census and photos . Fred

Yes Fred, I do that too - but it is the 'bits' of possibly connected, possibly not info that I wanted to be somewhere so IF I ever found a connection they would be there safe and sound to be integrated.

Heather - you sound like me. I've never looked at any instructions or anything. I think I'll have to play about with FTM and maybe I can get rid of all the tiny pieces of scrap paper with rubbishy notes that are laid all over the house if I find this 'Research Journal' thing. Kath. x

How about adding an unrelated person or persons, and ading the info to them. Then if you find a connection you have the details to hand. Or even create a new tree with all the info in. Fred

Heather thanks for shouting me;; Great going to print of so I can see what to do;; Yeah somewhere to store a census;; I know they are stored when you merge them to the individual, but have never fathomed out how to view it once this is done;; Anyone tell me how;; and how to get into the book where ever the instruction thing is;; Babs ' having very senior days lately

Oh well, for once I am ahead! (I think?!) The family history program I use has a notes facility where you can view all the outstanding things in one place AND each individuals census, photos, BMD certs and anything else you care to add as a picture is all available with one click when viewing the person concerned! Babs, you have to save the census image and then put in on FT as a scrap book additon. The help tab at the top tells you lots of stuff, but you have to know what you want to know first! Fred, cant add a fictitious person as that would confuse me even more. What I want to save is things like - the whole parish records for births in St Marys Rotherhithe - which may have a couple of dozens of connections but may not. And someone very kindly sent me some early 19th century church school info with pupils who may be mine, but may not be. So I just wanted to keep a sort of list of things that I could refer to later on if a connection suddenly rears its beautiful head.

Heather I have found the best way to do that is in excel. I know it initially means a lot of typing (arrgh) but worth it in the end I have found. What I have done is create a complete colour coded list of any baptisms, marriages, deaths burials I come across which you can then sort by name date etc. I have several colums fathers name spouse name mothers name and more. For the census I have done a similar thing but given each family a number as I have entered them, as a child marries and is tracked through the census they are allocated the next number available but I indicate in the original family the new number, and also alongside the new number the original family number. Last bit sounds complicated but isn,t in reality. I have tried to do this in FTM but you cannot get the sort capability to enable you to double check the info. or fit in the strays. If that lot doesn,t make sense let me know!!! Am struggling tonight to think logically, had one of those days.

It does make sense but I dont think Im up to it! Many thanks for explaining though - perhaps one day I shall get that organised.
