I am looking for information about John Angus Burnside who is described as "an examiner of small arms ammunition" at Woolwich in the 1901 census. Presumably part of the Ordnance Corps. He died in 1939 and on his death certificate he is described as an "overlooker at Royal Arsenal (retired)" I would assume he was still active during WW1. Does anyone know where I could get any records. Are there any pension records. I really need to find his date of birth. |

Thanks for quick reply. I have the birth certificate of A John Burnside born Woolwich in 1870 but unfortunately the middle name ANGUS does not appear on it. I therefore need to find alternate records to verify the d,o.b. to link the two documents john Angus died just before the 1939 registration so that is another avenue closed to me. |

If that's your man in 1901, he added the ANGUS later |

Thanks to everyone who replied. I am very grateful. He did marry Ellen Bush. I have the marriage certificate for that which I know is correct although he doesn't use Angus on that either. My problem is I need to verify that the John Burnside born Woolwich in 28th August 1870 is Indeed John Angus. If I can do that I can then link him with John Burnside and Margaret Ryan who were both Irish. The doubt is the family have always insisted that John Angus Burnside had SCOTTISH roots but I can find no evidence of this fact.. |

As it was 1939 no informant is given nor name of parent. These became standard of course along with date of birth from the late 1960's. The worrying thing he died on 30th January 1939. Age at death given is 69 years. If this is correct it rules out John Burnside born Woolwich August 1870 as he would not have been 69 for another 8 months. It could of course have been a lazy mistake..When was he born ? 1870. What is the year now? 1939. Subtract the two you arrive at 69. Lets face it they were not as particular with records in years gone by as they are today. |

Does the death cert give his address? |

Yes his final address was 79 Brookhill Road in Woolwich but for some reason actual death after a massive heart attack was at Woolwich New Road opposite Sandy Hill Road. Could this be a hospital? How can this help us find a date of birth |
