You might be able to find your grandparents' marriage at..............

https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/services/go-groni-online

Not free - and restricted

For data protection reasons, if you are using the internet to search the register, some of the records will not be available to view. You will be able to access the following records:

• birth records over 100 years old
• marriage records over 75 years old
• death records (including World War II death records) over 50 years old

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 16 Dec 2018 13:11

Thanks for that, Ray

So.............the birth info posted earlier is probably correct for your grandfather, although there is no second forename

And you said in your original post that his second forename was James

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 16 Dec 2018 13:11

William Henry?
You said William James in your opening post.

It would have been helpful if you'd acknowledged the info Tiggit posted on page one and said that you had all of it already

This is a LONG SHOT for 1911, bearing in mind that Jean, Jeanie, Jennie were all interchangeable.

Ray

Ray Report 16 Dec 2018 15:34

thanks Erika and tiggit for all your work not sure on this last post from tiggit as the 1911 censes states she was 41 and she was not born until 1904 so I would of though it cant be right I could be wrong

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 16 Dec 2018 15:47

Oh dear, you've looked at the MOTHER on the census which I posted!!

The (possible) child is listed as JENNIE - hence my comments about interchangeable names!!!!!

Until you get some documents, everything is speculation

Kayak Report 17 Dec 2018 15:52

Looking at the 1901 census and the 1911 census I'm not sure that the 1898 marriage in Downpatrick for Robert and Jane that I posted earlier is correct. It states that both were single but on the 1901 census there are 3 boys (Robert aged 22, Thomas aged 18 and James aged 16 and there is quite an age difference between Robert (aged 54) and Jane (aged 30) so it looks like Jane was Robert's 2nd wife.

This looks like Robert's first marriage:
19/4/1877 Robert Irvine and Sarah McNeice

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1877/11133/8076592.pdf

Their son Robert's birth:
12/6/1877 Bally Kennedy parents Robert and Sarah Irvine (nee McNeice) father's occ Labourer

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1877/03014/2104108.pdf

Birth reg for Thomas:
22/8/1881 Bally Kennedy

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1881/02819/2033987.pdf

Birth for James:
6/12/1883 Bally Kennedy

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1883/02716/1999338.pdf

Death for Sarah (aged 34) in 1891:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1891/06065/4729099.pdf

There is this marriage for Robert Erwin to Jane Anna Shannon (recorded Shannan) on 24/11/1893 which looks to be the Robert and Jane Irvine in the 1901 census

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1893/10611/5865946.pdf

Looking at the birth registrations for children of Robert and Jane only 2 seem to have been registered with the mother's maiden name of Macarteney,

Sarah born 1895
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1895/02197/1830293.pdf

and Jane in 1904

Margaret born 1898 (mother's maiden name recorded as Shannon and all others recorded below have Shannon as mother's maiden name)
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1898/02076/1792191.pdf

John born 1899:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1899/02021/1775311.pdf

William born 1900:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1900/01977/1761684.pdf

Hugh born 1901:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1901/01935/1748588.pdf

Mary born 1909:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1909/01605/1644239.pdf

Possible death for Jane Anna (aged 50) in 1921:

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 18 Dec 2018 11:01

All the info posted is speculative - nothing can be taken as proven until you get some certificates.

I'm not disputing that Tiggit's findings could be the right person.....................simply being realistic

Kayak

Kayak Report 18 Dec 2018 11:12

Jean/Jane had sisters Sarah born 1895, Margaret born 1898 and Mary Elizabeth born 1909, ,she also had brothers John born 1899, William born 1900 and Hugh born 1901.( all children of Jane Anna (nee Shannon and Robert Irvine) She also had 3 half brothers, Robert born 1877, Thomas born 1881 and James born 1883. (these 3 half brothers were the children from Robert's 1st marriage to Sarah McNeice).

This looks like the birth reg for Jean/Jane's mother Jane Anna Shannon ( a little older than recorded on census and death records):

birth 17/10/1867 Jane Anna Shannon:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1867/03467/2273386.pdf

NOTE the mother's maiden name looks to be Macartney.

This might be where the confusion of the mother's maiden comes from (Robert thinking that he was being asked for his wife Jane's mother's maiden name and not his wife's maiden name)

Ray

Ray Report 18 Dec 2018 11:41

thanks tggit I have added them to my tree with notes saying this might not be right I find irish records very confusing and also hard to find .there is also no one left to ask .

and yes Erika a know its speculative and I probably would never get 100c proof but we live in hope a am waiting for some response from other people trees to contact me they may have more insight into the Irvine family thank you both for your help .

ray merry Christmas

From GRONI, I had a few credits left:

William Rankin and Jean Irvine (no middle names) married 7/10/1930 at St Catherine's, Killead, Antrim by licence, church of Ireland.

Both full age, bachelor & spinster, he was a labourer, residence The Diamond, father James Rankin, labourer (deceased). Jean named her father as Robert Irvine, labourer (deceased.

Witnesses were William Courtney & Margaret Rankin, who married on the same day.

Certificates will give no further info, but the reference for ordering is M/1930/G1/2466/4/11 & Margaret's certificate ends with /10
