I just found a Death in Sheffield for an Emma Sewell o/n/d 1946, age 73, approx birth year 1873- but didn’t say where born so may not be her - we lost her after 1901 Census when we found Evelyn Hood.

ArgyllGran Report 11 May 2018 13:36

Assuming Emma Sewell in Derbyshire in 1901 is the right person - we don't see her after 1901.

And we don't see Evelyn Hood before 1911.

So no proof, but it seems that between1901 and 1911 she may have been transforming into Evelyn Hood, and giving birth to Reuben.

Although, if Ivy is her daughter, the name Hood was involved from the time of Ivy's baptism in 1894

Maureen

Maureen Report 11 May 2018 15:15

If the birth of Dorothy Sewell is correct, she was baptised as Ivy Dorothy Hood because living with William & Emma Hood? Perhaps Emma Sewell decided to adopt their name when she gave birth to Reuben?
Have sent for Ivy's marriage certificate in hope may shed some light.

Afraid I've found Emma from Derbyshire in 1911. She got married and moved back to Sheffield.

found Ivy D, Harry J Eileen N, John H, and Kathleen J M House all living Colesmead Rd, Riegate in 1946 . Don't know if that helps any. There is also a Sheila House there in 1960 , who was born in 1938. birth index seems to suggest Sheila and Kathleen mother was a Hood

Maureen

Maureen Report 16 May 2018 16:32

Thank you Elizabeth - that is helpful. We found Ivy D House, Harry J House, Kenneth C, and Maureen R, all living at same address Colesmead Rd., Reigate on 1939 Register. Kathleen and Sheila's mother was indeed Ivy D House (nee Hood). Any additional information would be much appreciated, also any information about Evelyn Hood prior to the 1911 census (with Reuben Hood, son, born 1903). We know she married Joseph Gower in 1915 and later lived at Warwick Rd., Redhill.
Desperately looking for birth details for Ivy Dorothy Hood (we have her Baptism) and anything regarding Evelyn Hood - her Father is listed on her marriage to Joseph Gower as Thomas Hood, Saddler.

Maureen Report 29 May 2018 16:43

Hi, Have Marriage Certificate for marriage 15/8/1916 Harry James House (father Harry House dec) and Ivy Dorothy Hood (father William Hood dec) At the time of the Marriage they were both living at 3 Warwick Road, Redhill, with Evelyn (Hood) and her husband Joseph Gower! The witnesses were George Broughton and Joseph F Dight.
Their first child was Kathleen Matilda Joan House, b 1919 - have found her on Electoral Registers but can't find her anywhere on 1939 Register - although would think she was in Surrey? Know she died in 1965 and was buried with Evelyn and Joseph Gower in Redstone Cemetery, Surrey.
Still can't find the actual birth of Reuben Hood (1903 - Reading) nor anything prior to 1911 census for Evelyn Hood. Reuben says his father was Reuben Hood on his Marriage Cert in 1922 - but was it Edward James Smith as suggested on 1911 Census? Evelyn says her father Thomas Hood (saddler)on her Marriage Cert to Joseph Gower in 1915. She was living at time of marriage at Briars Cross, Limpsfield, and the witnesses were L.R. Smith and Irene Martin. Desperately trying to find the connection between Evelyn Hood, Ivy Dorothy Hood (House) and Kathleen Matilda Joan House.

There are two closed records along with Ivy D etc in 1939. One of those will be Kathleen, probably.

rootgatherer Report 29 May 2018 22:24

If Kathleen died in 1965, you would expect her record in 1939 to be open.

These are the only deaths I see for a Kathleen M J registered in 1965 and none of them appear to have been born in 1919.

Hi, thank you everyone for your input, especially Argyllgran. Well, with a bit of help from Rootschat, we now have some more info:-
We were so near, with 1871 Census, Emma Jane Sewell, aged 2, b Sheffield, daughter of the notorious Thomas Sewell, horse collar maker and Emily nee Bristow, and again in 1881, aged 12. Still can't find her in 1891, but in 1901 she was working as a servant in Kensington, shown as Everlyn Sewell, and as in 1911, she is stating b. Sheffield. So we were right until we found the other Emma Sewell who lived in Sheffield and married Kidd.
The consensus of opinion seems to be that Emma Jane Sewell was indeed Evelyn Hood, as the birth dates shown for Emma Jane Sewell J/A/S 1868 Sheffield Vol 9c page 436, and birth shown for Evelyn Hood on 1939 Register, 21st July 1868 tie up.
Also thought that Evelyn was mother of Ivy Dorothy Hood - baptised as parents William Hood and Emma (that part was right?) living at 80 Templeton Edmonton Tottenham Middx. On checking 1891 census for that property, appears that a William C Amos and his wife Eugenie M Amos lived there with their son Charles then. Would be good to find Emma/Everlyn on 1891 census!!! Therefore, Evelyn Hood would have been the grandmother of Kathleen Matilda Joan House (mothers maiden name Hood) It seems that Evelyn never married, prior to marrying Joseph Gower in 1915, but Ivy's father may well have been a William Hood Carpenter. Equally we don't know the father of Reuben Hood, Evelyn's son born 1903 (down as Reuben Hood on his marriage in 1922) Any more thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

I wish we could find Reuben's birth.

There are no Hood / Sewell births 1901-5.
Several Sewell (unmarried) births, but no Reuben or anything similar.
None of the Reubens born in Berkshire 1901-5 have mms Sewell

I know, so frustrating - the answer must be there somewhere. Feel sure if we could find Emma/Evelyn 1891 Census May hold clue? Ivy Dorothy born 189:/4 DLston Midx, Emily Sewell (mother of Emma)born there. Evelyn being mother of Ivy, grandmother of Kathleen House would explain the close relationship - why Ivy and Harry were living with Evelyn and Josep Gower at time of their marriage and why Kathleen buried with her grandmother. Who was William Hood Carpenter - must have existed but they weren’t married - also need Reubens father. Where does the widowed Edward James Smith fit in?
